Meta Data Preset Generator Script

The only external mechanism that can control Capture One in detail is Applescript.

I checked the Apple script dictionary for Capture One 21, and found no commands that could set the contents of a preset or style. Applescript can apply a preset, but not make one.

What I did when I migrated from Aperture is I created  some dummy images (from some some out of focus rejects) and applied a preset to each one. I imported these into Capture One, and created a preset from each dummy image.

    Crude, but effective.

Hi Eric, thanks a lot for the reply and checking what is possible. This dummy strategy i have used in my old Aperture days:;-) once imported, I could just drop the images on the places panel, but then I still don’t have presets, just another workflow. Seems like i have to do some boring text work.-(

What I would do is open each dummy image in Capture One, open the Metadata Tool, click on its "menu" icon (three lines), then select "save as custom preset", you will have to type the name.

    Phrank,

As Eric has suggested a way to create a preset from the metadata tool it would be quite easy to just make a Preset the next time you shoot at a particular location and then use that preset for the next import at that place.

If you have activated Preset stacking you could apply several common presets for a batch of images during the import process.

Alternatively you mentioned "dropping the images on the Places panel".

If you have one image in the current set of images with appropriate fields populated you can do the same thing in Capture One.

"Places", in particular, have an assumed hierarchical concept in the metadata, presumably something like Aperture offered?

So if one has the Metadata fields displayed in the Filters tool one can see places subdivided into Country>State>City>Location.

If you select a set of images (With "Edit all" active) and drop on the "Location" level it and all of the higher levels will be added to the metadata for all of those images. I'll guess that is just about the same as you have described for Aperture.

Any one of those images would then be a source for creating a Metadata Preset which could be used on Import.

I use a metadata preset on import to set a Copyright entry automatically but I am less concerned about Places data since I tend to use Keywords for that information anyway and I work in sessions which means the session name, for me, will often identify the location as well. However I also know that, should I wish to populate the places fields, I could do it in bulk in a few seconds.

Probably less time than I would take to remember to change the Import Presets before every import activity. Of course, your mileage may well vary on that.

I hope you find these observations useful.

One slightly hidden behaviour is that when you copy to clipboard, all adjustments and Metadata are copied.

Hwowever, only selected items will be pasted; the items to paste must be selected, individually or by category e.g contrast or exposure.

You can paste the Metadata by (manually) selecting the Metadata category, or by selecting individual items in the Metadata category, e.g. Image City

There is an auto selection function, but only adjustments can be autoselected.

If Auto selection is enabled, any manual selects are cleared on every copy operatio, including all selections for Metadata tems.

Thus, if wish to repeatedly (copy and) paste certain metadata fields to selected images, you should turn off the autoselect feature in the clipboard, and then select the Metadata fields you wish to paste.

Hi Eric, thanks for more input. Now as get everything ready for my move from Aperture and Lightroom to C1, I realised, I also hated this copy & paste thing in Aperture. It’s much easier if you just select the images and then type in the info you need in the metadata field (like in Lightroom and Media Pro), which writes the info to all seleted images – like keywords in C1. I think the fastest way will be to work with annotated dummy images and just drop images into place…

    Hello,

While researching information on Capture One to ditch Lightroom, I came across these message exchanges.

Are you still looking for a solution for generating Metadata files?

If so, I might have a solution for you...

    @Eric

Well let me know about this solution.

In the meantime I’m testing Photo Mechanic+ and NeoFinder to do all my Digital Asset Management…

    Hello again,

Briefly, it is an application developed in Laravel/PHP and a MySQL database.

You must therefore either install it on a Web server or install WAMP, if you are on Windows (https://www.wampserver.com/) or MAMP if you are on Mac (https://www.mamp.info/en/windows/).

This application manages the various events, photography locations and any personal information.

When everything is correctly filled in, this can generate the metadata files in Capture One format.

    Best regards

    Eric

    Hello,

As I said above, there is a solution on Mac -> if you are on Mac (https://www.mamp.info/en/windows/).

Other small features: you can export/print the reports to import them into a calendar or print a "roadmap".

    Have a good day.

    Eric
