Tethered overlay problem
-
Maybe a process recipe did not go along?
Make sure you got one that is active with the chosen overlay.0 -
The JPGs are produced in Photoshop. The workflow has worked perfectly until the upgrade to v21.

The overly is applied to the RAW preview and is not
file format dependant.0 -
This is what happens when I apply an overlay.

Hi Peter,
to create a proper screenshot, press simultaneously SHIFT + ⌘ + 4!0 -
have you tested the same file saved as standard tif ?
0 -
No. The point is that I already have the jpgs as part of my standard workflow. So far, 3,000 of them. I never had to convert any file specially for use as an overlay when I was using v20 and it's inconvenient to have to do so now that I've upgraded.

As I said, " The overlay is applied to the RAW preview and is not
file format dependant."0 -
well but it would help finding the cause of the issue by ruling out it is format depending

Are the jpg files regular jpgs, not one of the less common jpeg types?
If you change any of the sliders - scaling or opacity for example - does that result in visible changes of any sort other than the intended slider function?
0 -
Changing the sliders has no obvious effect other that the intended. The jpgs are standard types produced from Photoshop CC using the legacy export for web function. I looked at the settings which I'm using there and I can see that in the preview screen the black background is showing up there too. The jpgs look completely normal when viewed after export and I've been using the same settings for several years. C1 v.20 overlay worked as expected and didn't show this black background. I might downgrade to C1 20 for the rest of this project as I don't want to change my workflow at this stage.

hm, sometimes things change and files get corrupted but it seems you have no interest in finding out if this is the case....

Things do change. When I'm finished with this project I'll happily experiment but with several thousand images behind me and probably another thousand to go, now isn't the time.
I wonder if I should change the Photoshop workflow to save the files as tiff before converting to jpg. I would have used png but the client wants jpg.
Thanks for thinking about it.

It's perhaps a coincidence that you are seeing this with a release the deprecates support for JPEG2000 and JPEG XR formats. One has to wonder though.

I would try to drag a new raw file from the browser to the overlay field, takes some time to render. does this work, if not it is likely a software issue if yes...
open the jpg overlay files folder in c1 ( jpg support activated ) and look if the files are rendered correct
convert one of the overlay flies to a new supported format like tiff with c1 or ps
if this works use PS scripts - image processor to make new versions of your old files takes just minutes
going back to an older version is for sure more time consuming as c1 is not backwards compatible

OK. I copied a raw file to the folder which I use for overlays. The BG has a background value of 243,241,237,241. Almost white. When I open it as an overlay it renders as very dark grey at full opacity.
I also tried opening one of the jpgs in C1. It looks perfect. No problems rendering it. In the overlay menu, the thumbnail of the jpg also renders perfectly as white BG. It's only the main overlay screen where it's wrong.

ok, have you tried to completely remove and reinstall c1 ?
be careful to not remove your sessions
( have you also tried to turn hardware acceleration off, if not give it a try first ? )

I'll try those.
Thanks.

So. I followed the link for uninstalling and I'm very pleased to say that now the overlay is working as it should.
Many thanks for that.

This morning I started work on the project again and I have the same problem. I tried jpgs and raw files. The black background and pixelated edges are back. The small overlay preview above the list of files looks normal with white bg and normal sharp edges.
I haven't changed anything since re-installing.

hm, seems something gets corrupted on you system, this are nasty problems. I assume you are at the latest versions of osx and c1. do you have a lot of other software which may interfere installed ?
as a next troubleshooting step I would create a new user (admin) and test if the issue is gone or persists.

I Have a similar problem,
all of a sudden I started viewing images like this0 -
I've created a new user and the problem seems to have disappeared. I don't have a lot of time to experiment today but it could be that there's a conflict. I haven't installed anything new since the C1 upgrade but of course some of the other stuff has updated.
There's not much other software on the system apart from the "normal" Apple stuff:
Photoshop (2020) and Bridge, Wacom Tablet, Evernote, Chronosync, iThoughts and airmail. Epson print drivers.

if it works with a new user something is maybe interacting with c1 in an unwanted way, especially software which runs in the background can lead to all kind of troubles. if it reoccurs it may also be a bug which came with the latest c1 version, but i could not reproduce it, going back one or two versions may help. I would also use activity monitor to see what non osx processes are running especially when it happens again.

Thanks for trying. I may well go back to C1 20 for the duration of the current project and the possibly a clean os install and gradually add the other software. For now I'll just put up with the problem.
Thanks again,
regards
Peter
