Better way to "locate" MULTIPLE photos within a collection

I think only if the folder if "offline" then you can "locate" the folder path. Else, you only can locate the images one by one. As far as I know there is no improvement in C1 for years.

I've been in this situations many times with several cataloging applications (e.g. LrC, ...). And if you're not getting help from the app itself (which one could expect in 2022 with technology like AI, ML and whatnot...) then I have an old-school workaround:

Situation: Your catalog/CO thinks, the files with the adjustments are still in the "old" places - so you may have moved individual photos outside of the app, maybe in Finder/Explorer?

    In short:

    1. move them back (OUTSIDE the app, like you did in the first place)
    2. CO should find them now (so no need to "locate" anymore)
    3. now move them from INSIDE the app to wherever you want them.

You could say it is a balance between what's less cumbersome for you -> either "locate" with the dialog - search, point and click, or simpler "drag and drop" actions in Finder.

Either way, please make a backup of your catalog in case you mess something up.

The better solution would be to have CO implement an old feature I know from Lightroom: the Locate dialog needs an option [x] find nearby missing photos. This was also a feature in QuarkXPress anno 1994...

Thanks for the info.  At this point I’ve moved the images too much trying to figure out where they should be and it’s become a mess. I just wish someone from this company would ever respond (to anything). I was trying to get better information moving a catalog from my PC to my new Mac but after several inquiries and months waiting with no response, I just had to try it. It didn’t help that I had also imported a few catalogs to my main one over the years. I’m guessing this created issues with having images tied to multiple catalog db files that broke the connection.
Moving forward I’ve created a new catalog (with just a few images) and experimented moving the database file (along with the other folders of adjustments, etc) outside capture one then using the browse box to point C1 where it was moved and that went well. I also then moved folders of files (with just a few collections created) within capture one and that also seemed to work and not break any connections.

which brings me to contemplating deleting this mess and trying again. But like I said, it’s complicated and I’m unsure if I have catalog db files that are still being used/referenced within my main catalog.

But regardless, I really wish you could just select a bunch of images (within a collection) then point to which folder they exist. I’d be happy and thus would easily fix a large majority of images without adjustments or access to the original file.

I believe if you import a catalog into another catalog then only the images (image references, respectively) and maybe collections and stuff  and the cache item files (thumbnails, proxies) as well as the local adjustment files (.comask files) will be imported into the target catalog (or it sidecar folders), but there is no reference to the source catalog anymore, so I think you don't have to worry about references to imported catalogs.

Only if you want to use your main catalog AND still want to use the other source catalogs which you imported into the main catalog, then you probably cannot (or should not) move images withing the library tool of C1, exactly because there is no link between the catalogs, and the original source catalogs wouldn't notice the move of the image files.

Okay, that’s good to know. But I wish I knew how this got so bad then. I don’t remember every step I took but just remember getting the ? On many or most of my folders. And When I clicked on locate, it found them all. But probably 40% or more of my collections were broke, which also effects any changes/variants made even in the folders. So I have no choice but to go and locate them one by one (thousands and thousands).

Frustrating with zero help from the company collecting the money. But I guess most are that way thses days, so I just have to push through. I’m ready to try this again, but feel like it may just create the same headache.

My NEW folder creation in new catalogs  is much more organized and I’m hoping my collections creation will be as well.

Did this problem occur directly after the move to the Mac or already on the PC?

Can you make this more clear?

And When I clicked on locate, it found them all. But probably 40% or more of my collections were broke,

All the folders are online again?

If you now click on All Images, how many (roughly) of the images in the browser are offline ("?")? Unfortunately you cannot filter nor sort for the offline/online status...

What collections are broken, and what do you mean with "broken"?

Directly after the move.  I wish I could remember what I did other than simply copying the entire folder that contains the pictures and primary catalog to my Mac.  I don't remember if I just opened capture one and created a new catalog and pointed to the DB file or what.  I can only say that it while it worked, it didn't look to pretty at it has been.  When I imported 3 of my older capture one catalogs (when on my PC), it imports them as projects, then folder and albums was how I had been using collections.  As mentioned, the BEST way would be Capture one recognizing my selected images and pointing them to a folder where they exist and then magically "connect."  But given that's most likely NEVER going to happen at this point, I'm trying to decide what I want to do.  Continue with the maddening locating process or try this all over again.

One possibility would be when I get my new NAS delivered and setup.  I "could" try a do over on that.  Move the DB file to my Mac, then open a new catalog? or import (again, not sure how I'm supposed to do this, then do the locate of all the folders existing on my NAS drive.  But I believe I did this before and it broke most connections in my collections folders, which started this whole mess.

To answer your second question. Yes, after opening Capture One on my new Mac, initially I had to click LOCATE on the Folders and they were then all online.  BUT...many images in those folders didn't retain the changes made.  In addition, those images that were in my virtual folders (under my created collections), were showing the "?".  So I had to manually "locate" them so they would show variants, changes made, etc.

I almost would have like to just operate out of my Folders (which is shown at the bottom of Capture One's catalog), but they were not showing the symbol that indicated changes I had made.  They did, AFTER I went to my collections and located the file (which ironically was IN those same folders below).

I'm also thinking trial and error is going to be the way to do this.  Go back and create a catalog in capture one on my pc (with both the db file and folders on the same external SSD drive).  Have maybe 20 images, a few collections, in multiple folders.  Then try moving to my Mac and see what works and what doesn't.....

But even then I'm still a little worried as there are so many folders and collections and imported catalogs that even though it works on my PC, it may break when moving to my Mac.  We'll see.

Any other thoughts are appreciated.  Especially as to the proper way to transfer a catalog.  IE create a NEW catalog on my Mac, then do the "browse feature" to point to the db and adjustments and cache folders...Or import.

And to continue my ramble/rant....I wonder if when I imported catalogs on my PC, if that created part of the issue when moving to the Mac (specifically the adjustments folders that were PREVIOUSLY used in those catalogs).  I never touched those folders after importing.  And they were all in different folders....

This sounds strange, all images in all your folders were online again, but the images in the albums were not? Same images? Maybe, after locating your folders if you would have restartet C1 then the images in the albums would have been identified as being online.

To me this all sounds as if you were better off starting all over, migrating again from scratch, either to the Mac or NAS, and write down every step you take and any weird observation you have. Also, have checkpoints in the process where you watch out what succeeded and what didn't.

Before you do that, verify the catalog under main menu>File>Verify catalog.

Regarding your last post, yes, test your procedure with a small catalog first, good idea.

Do you think creating a new catalog on the Mac is necessary? Maybe create a new thread with the title "Moving catalog from PC to Mac - please help" or similar, to attract users with exactly the knowledge how to do this migration.

    Good luck.

About a new catalog.  I don't know.  I assume it's either that (and enter in the name of the one I'm moving along with identifying where I copied it to) or import one into a current one.  That's the question I think.

Yeah, you are probably right about creating a new thread.  I've read a few that were 2 years old and older, but details just were not specific enough to help me.  I'll try some examples of creating a test referenced catalog on my PC (but resident on the attached SSD drive) and with images and few collections with adjustments, also in folder on the SSD.  Then I'll try the above by FIRST just moving the catalog on to my Mac (leaving the folder and images on the SSD).  If I can get that to work, I should be able to then move the folders portion from the SSD to a location on my MAC within the Capture One program (which is how I've read it supposed to work and not lose links.  We'll see....

    Sounds reasonable.

Been there. My solution may not work for all but it's a workaround that may be worth trying.

Move the images from the folder A you're using to make the new links into a temporary folder B.

Synchronise folder A: CO asks if you want to remove missing images. Yes.

Return images to folder A. Synch A. CO asks if you want to add. Yes.

    Hope it works for you.

In a similar bind. Catalog lost track of where the images were due to switching the drive it was reading the catalog file from (Desktop -- Raid)  Im trying to retain changes, so I havent syncd yet but Ive done about 20 manually. the catalog has 7000 images but it seems like half are reading as OFFLINE.  :/

Whats the best way to retain the changes and sync the folder its looking for the raws? (Ultimately I need to Pack all the selects (400) as EIPS, so im switching to a session rather than the catalog its in.

One step after another. WIthout knowing which half of your 7000 images are offline there is hardly a remote analysis possible, but maybe here is an idea: Rename your top folder of your image hierarchy on the RAID so that all your folders and images go offline, then try to locate the top folder and see if C1 cycles through all of them.

Second, create a new session. Cou can export your 400 images from the catalog "as originals", check "include adjustments", to the Capture folder of the session.

For anyone that might come across this problem in the future, I think I found a solution.

If you right click on an image that is offline and select Show in Library, it will direct you to the photo folder on the left side of the screen. If you right click on that folder, you are able to locate an entire folder and it will relink all of your photos within that folder if the names of the photos are still the same.

    Hope this helps.
