Canon 5D Mark Iv Tethering issues MacOS 11.x
Forgive me if this is a repeat, but I can't find a response that works or is more recent than 2 years ago regarding the Canon 5D Mark IV and tethering to Capture One on a Mac M1 running MacOS 11 and higher.
I'm running C1 on a MacBook Air M1 but cannot get it to recognize my camera when I attach it via tether cable. It flat out does not recognize that there is a camera attached. Same with my second shooter's Canon 7D Mark II (which oddly enough IS recognized by Adobe Lightroom 2021, though that program doesn't recognize the 5D Mark IV either). Any help or advice would be appreciated. I am running MacOS 12 (Monterey), though it isn't recognizing it under MacOS 11 (Big Sur) either. I have Capture One 21, and the Canon 5D Mark IV is using Firmware version 1.3.3.
Thanks!

Thanks Stephen, that does look like the latest Canon firmware. Hmm, it's just such a common camera to deal with, I hope I can find a tethered solution soon. I couldn't even get EOS Utility to work. My Sony A7R works just fine with C1, but I cant use that for work. I'm about to have to try an Sony A-1 and I have no idea if it will connect. I am using a new M1 Pro laptop so I did anticipate some issues, mostly regarding Monterey.

Well I was all very happy with my nice shiny new 16" M1 to go digi stills unit on an Apple/Nike commercial. The photographer was shooting 1DXii and had his old 5Diii and neither would connect. My Sony's work fine.
Wifing JPEGs is pointless I need to see the RAW that's my job. Ended up going back to my old late 2013 which didn't miss a beat and flipped the files to the M1 for selects and process.
We had 3x tether tools cable both USB A with adapter and an USB-C
Proper ruined my day this needs sorting ASAP it should just work.
We did get one whole frame at the beginning of the day but that was it.

Ric, in this thread:
one person was able to get their Canon to connect by removing the card and another by updating their camera firmware. I had the same problem with Canons when i tested earlier, but I don't have a body to test these fixes. I would really like this issue ironed out as well!

If anyone is still having issues, try using a shorter cable for tethering. That solved my problem. I used the cable that came with the camera (maybe 3ft long) instead of my Tether Tools 15ft cable and that apparently was the issue. My husband (an engineer) said it was an issue with voltage drop because of the long cable most likely. I did buy the TetherBooster Pro from Tether Tools last night as well, so I'm hoping that will allow me to use the 15ft Tether Tools cord with no issues.

It works for me with Capture One 22 and any cable as long as I remove all memory cards from the 5D IV. Very weird since it worked just fine with the cards before.

I had the same issue. I've just updated the firmware (new firmware was released today by canon) and everything is back to normal.

Dear Anis Martin, I only see a last firmware from june 2021, can you tell me where did you find the new firmware? I see there is new program released 4 days ago, but no firmware. Could you please help me with that?

Just wanted to thank all of you for sharing the concern.
In my case, I upgraded the firmware to the one released on june 2021 (I spoke with Anis and he realised the one he used is the same, no new firmware from 2022 available), and get it to work
I have a mbp m1 14 inches, and I want to say that it only works if I turn on the camera frist, and then open C1
If I open C1 prior to turn on the camera, it doesnt appear.
Hope it helps someone else.

not sure if you all figured it out but I just did...
I have a new M1 pro and my Canon 5d4 was not being recognized by the computer let alone capture !
I have a new tetherPro cable with usb3 to usbc adaptor '' not straight usbc ''
I updated my Canon 5D Mark IV firmware to version 1.3.3 [Mac]
oh and took the SD card out when plugged. ''DID NOT WORK WITH CARD IN CAMERA ''
( found a YouTube video to help me go step by step for the firmware update )
WORKS PERFECT !! HOPE THIS HELPS

I have a macbook pro 2021 with an operating system Monterey 12.2. My CaptureOne version is the newest 15.2 so its all compatible. When I try to shoot tethered with Canon 5D mark IV it says CAMERA ERROR and gives me 3 different reasons why this may have happened. None of the reasons makes sense because I had no problems shooting tethered with the same camera and the same cable just a few days ago. Tried 4 different cables, SD card is removed, pc can see my camera connected via USB. Capture One is allowed both in accessibility and full disc access. Any ideas how to solve this issue?

Upgrading the camera's firmware worked for me fortunately!

Using an Apple Brand USB-C to USB adapter should allow your M1 Pro MBP to see your 5D MK IV. A powered hub also will work . My guess is Apple has some sort of safety built in there T3/4 hubs. This has and is working at my studio presently. Hope this helps. Mac OS Monterey, 5D MkIV Firmware 1.3.1& Capture One 22 15.4.1.7

My 5dmIV connects to M1 mac air only once. Then if cable is disconnected or the camera is turned off I need to close Caprue One, turn off camera, start Capture one and then turn on camera - exectly that oder. ANNOYING!
firmware 1.3.3, macos 13.0.1, Capture One 15.4 and 16.0, usb C to A hub by apple, the same cable works with the same program version on Windows PC. They did NOTHING to fix Canon tether issue on m1
