Nikon Z9 RAW (NEF) High-Efficiency
ImplementedPlease add support for Nikon Z9 RAW (NEF) High-Efficiency * and High-Efficiency formats ASAP. Only lossless compressed RAWs are supported in the current version (Capture One 22 (For Nikon) build 15.0.0.94
-
Without full Z9 support, for all compression options (particularly HE* RAW), I will have to abandon Capt One immediately. This is a flagship camera for professionals by one of the top camera makers. I sincerely hope Capt One's suggestion that this "will be considered" as part of a "later version" is poorly worded. This should be an ASAP UPDATE to the current version. Z9 has been released for four months. A professional can't work with this lag in software support, and I may have to return to Adobe LR (which by the way, my HE* RAW images just loaded into beautifully).

I would add that by all reports, NIkon's HE* Raw fils are anything but "Lossy compressed." (as described by Capt One). They appear to be of nearly identical quality to the uncompressed NEF files at about 60% the file size. So MOST users are using this option.

There is a Capture One Nikon version. Seems awkward that this does not support the top Nikon camera as well as Adobe.
I hadn’t seen the bit about “phase one will consider support in a later version.” I have to agree that I can only hope that was poorly worded. It wasn’t what the sales reps were saying last year.

Yes, I HAVE Capture One for Nikon. I'm sorry I don't have link to that comment from Capt One. I saw multiple official comments to the effect that Capt One takes all feedback seriously and hopefully will include this in a future version. Also... that they do not disclose work in progress. Poor PR in my opinion.

It's actually at the top of this thread -
"...I have forwarded your request to add support for Nikon Z9 RAW (NEF) High-Efficiency formats to our Product Management team.
Hopefully, your feedback contributes towards a future version of Capture One.
Whilst we cannot comment on future releases, we take all suggestions on board."

Yes, please! I support this request. It's starting to cause some storage problems...

From Capt One:
"Hi Michael,
Thanks for contacting us. Our engineers are working on it. I can't give more information regarding dates or releases. But be assured that will be supported. Though we cannot comment on future releases and the features to be added, we recommend keeping an eye on this article - you can click Follow next to the title of the article to stay up to date with new features and improvements.

Another vote for HE* and HE support!
It's not only to save space on the Memory Cards, but also on hard disks and backups.

IMO, C1 is the best data management and image processing program out there, and believe me, and I've tried them all. I've ON1, Lightroom, various iterations of Luminar, previous Aperture user, and DXO. Every one of them falls short in some critical way. I like to try other software, and they always come up short in some way, often in crucial forms, and often in a significant player like Lightroom when I compare to Capture One. But it's a competitive market, and I think getting on board with the new formats from the Z9 is just part of premiere product support. It does irritate me to no end, though, how camera manufacturers continually create proprietary raw formats without releasing support to the major software companies that photographers use. There is just no way that Nikon, Canon, Sony, and so on will release a development product of the calibre of Capture One et al.

@Scott Fairbairn while I am prepared to concede that C1 is the highest quality RAW processor available, you seem to imply best data management. I can say with certainty it is not the fastest (but I would rather have quality).
I am curious about what critical shortcomings you see in data management.

Hi Verlon, I don’t have issues with data management. If I implied that, it was not intended. My only concern with C1 is the session/catalog system, but honestly, it doesn’t bother me. I just hope that Z9 alternative file formats are supported. And a blur brush, and content aware fill. Lol

By the time I get to content aware fill, I am headed to Affinity Photos.
A blur brush would be outstanding, but first I need those Z9 file formats supported.

This is really important. ASAP for the other two compressed formats please C1.

Same here. I own a Z9 since Christmas and have been wondering why I can't get Capture One (latest version) to read those files. I have now (finally) changed to Raw lossless compression to be able to use CO and not those other 'emergency' apps.

Commercial photographer here.
Plus one for this item. There have been comments on this thread for several months now, without any meaningful progress from support, so it would be appreciated for someone on the Product Team to actually provide clarity on the product roadmap for provision of this feature.
Support of this RAW file format is huge benefit of working with the Nikon Z9 and it's currently not accessible to any capture one user, so you're missing a value add for your commercial clients.
Looking forward to an update. Thanks!2 -
A solution ? Send an email to support every day so that they take the problem seriously?1

There is now more than 3 months this camera is commercialized, this means it has been released to firm like PhaseOne even before, but still we do not have a version able to handle the compressed .NEF of Z9, this is clearly not acceptable, the lack of answer from the support / commercial from PhaseOne seriously degrade the customer experience whether the responsibility for the delay is from Nikon or PhaseOne, more transparency is here definitely needed ....
From a practical point of view I cannot use the Z9s the way I should using C1, I may turn out to another software, risky business for you C1, as I may stay with and not return with C1 for the next upgrade next December, and I guess I would be not the only one ...

Is Capture One a professional grade photography software or ... just a hobbyist one? Will we see support for this new format in freeware software such as Darktable before it gets implemented in this so called "professional grade" software of yours? Your closest competitor has had at least partial support way sooner than you.
And Capture One even features Joe McNally as an avid C1 user? Does Capture One even care about the Nikon brand at all? I wonder if Joe is happy having to export every single picture he takes from Nikon Studio NX to a HUGE TIFF file then import back into C1 ...
Why I am still paying to upgrade Capture One is beyond me...

I only hope that the needed an due support to new Z9 compressed files will arrive before the release of the next C1 version considering the time we have been waiting not being obliged to pay for an additional upgrade, the commercial policy have to be fare

It seems the HE RAW files are based on TiCoRAW (tiny codec RAW), which is a third party process Nikon licensed.
So other companies could begin using this as well.0 -
Antonio, exactly. I paid (again) for C1 v22 explicitly for the full Z9 support...They can't even implement decent tethering support for Nikon cameras... which is supposedly the selling point of C1 compared to other such software. Pros aren't just using Canon's ...
If they do us the joke that it will only be supported in v23.... I'm done with Capture One...

Let me echo the above comments. C1 not supporting tethered Nikon Z9 Lossy Compressed file capture is extremely frustrating to all who depend on tethered shooting in RAW. The camera has been out for months, yet we are still awaiting the update. Nikon NX will support file capture, but frankly, it's several steps down from C1 quality. Hoping this is a priority with Capture One.

Adding my request here, Capture One team! Please add this file support.

C1 Team will update when they feel like its ready, the thing is this is a minor stuff for them, we are a niche for this request, so you can login support cases but i dont think this will change something, unfortunately :)
