Crop as unconstrained by default, not original
I just updated to Capture One 22 Pro 15.3 (for Mac) and the crop tool is set to Original by default on every photo. It had been on Unconstrained. So now each photo I go to crop, I have to go up to the Crop tool, click on it, and select Unconstrained for each and every different photo, which will make cropping twice as long now.
I went into Preferences and there is nothing there for setting Unconstrained as default.
Is this a bug or is there a solution?
Thank you!

Here the same, it does not remember the last setting and goes to original as default. As far as I am concerned, this a step backwards.

I hope they fix this soon, but as a workaround, select all your photos after import and change the crop to unconstrained. It will remember that for all the images selected.

I've just started using 22 today, and this is a nightmare! Thanks for the workaround, David Bostock. I'll just have to remember to do that every time I process a new batch of images!

I'm having the same issue. Would be great if there could be a pulldown in the crop settings tab in Preferences where you can set the Crop tool by default at (Last Used, Unconstrained, Original, etc ...)

I agree, the new set-up is a royal PIA!

This is -very- annoying. I crop to the image with rare exceptions. I don't care what some engineer decided. I want to set default to unconstrained.
Square is handy sometimes, the other sizes are useful very occasionally. Unconstrained is -always- handy.2 -
Yes, if you want it to stay on unconstrained when you went to the next image, you need to choose the other option in the preferences (global aspect ratio). That will give you the old behaviour. Variant aspect ratio is the new behaviour.

Me too, I am so tired of those betterments-for-the-worse. It is really time consuming and annoying. And it was fine before. Now I have to manually select unconstrained on 150+ images I am editing right now. I simply do not get it. This should be a professional software...

Another user that is fed up with the crop tool no longer remembering your last selection.... i.e. "Unconstrained".
Thanks David Grover for the workaround!

This is what the Crop preferences looks like for me on MacOS version of C1. I see no global setting option.

Last point in 15.3.1

Very frustrating, slows workflow. Thanks for the workaround David.

This is definitely a step backwards... This needs to be fixed ASAP

Unfortunately, I've had to roll back to C1 21 because C1 22 kept crashing the computer. The upshot is that at least I've got my unconstrained crop back!

Another instance of Change for Change Sake. Ever since CO was spun off from Phase One. I am also looking for a solution to the above. Hopefully with the next update. I REALLY like the old layout and tools.

Heads up, with the new update you change this setting (global crop setting or per image) in the preferences. Set to global, one more time switch to unconstrained, and your set for good.

There is an update 15.3.1 with the new crop prefs.

Thank you! Did not get notified by C1 of the update. Just installed it and thankfully, crop is now back to normal.

Windows 10 version still the same. defaults to Original.
Been using CO since version 3. WHY change all this stuff????

Would be so much better if the crop selction would just stick. cannot stand the new layouts either. like learning a new program

Paul - as noted, the latest update, 15.3.1, allows you the option to go back to how crop worked before 15.3.
And if you don't like the new default layout, you can customise it to be how you prefer it.

15.3.1? there is only 15.3.0 at the moment?

There is a bug in 15.3.0 which means that notification of the latest update may not show up. But go to the Capture One website and log in, and you can download 15.3.1.

sorry maybe I'm stupid but down loaded 15.3.1, go pref, crop, aspect ratio behaviour, clicked on use variant aspect ratio, open image, crop tool, still on original, click unrestrained, crop works ok, next image back to original.....

that's done it, great, thank you for you patience Ian.

No problem!

Wow.. If only I had known a few years ago that there was a work around for this. Should have researched it sooner. The crop should be unconstrained by default with the option to hold down a key to make it fixed aspect ratio.
