Do smart albums slow down Capture One?
Does anyone here have any impression of whether smart albums slow down Capture One?
For a very long time I've had issues with Capture One being slow and unresponsive (more details here), and I was thinking that perhaps smart albums could be part of the problem, if only a small part. But before I start deleting any them, I'd like to hear what other users think.

I don't know, but perhaps you could create a new catalog with no smart albums in it and compare the speed?

Thanks for the suggestion. That's probably what I'll need to do.

I've made a copy of my catalogue (though without the the thumbnails and previews) and deleted all smart albums, 23 in all, I think it was. As far as I can tell there may be a slight improvement, but if there is, it really is small. So I can safely conclude that smart albums aren't the cause of Capture One's sluggishness.

Hi Thomas,
I don't made this experience. I work a lot with smart albums in a catalog containing over 150.000 pictures and have no speed issues or lagging.
As you complain for many month speed issues and lagging, maybe a complete reset/reinstall of your Mac could bring redemption from your pain with C1? I'm shure that something is going wild with your Mac.
Cheers,

Hi Kassur,
Thanks for your reply.
What sort of computer are you using?
A complete reinstall would be worth trying, it's just that it takes so long to reinstall everything from scratch.
The thing is I have no such issues with any other application. But I guess the problems with Capture One could be caused by an underlying issue even if this issue does not affect other applications.
On the other hand, it may also be an undetected problem with my catalogue (the verification function shows no issues). With a new catalogue with a small number of images (created for testing) I have no issues, it's only with my current catalogue – which I've also tried recreating by importing it into an empty catalogue, though with no luck.
Best regards,
Thomas

I'm on MacBook Pro 2019 16' (16 GB, i9) with external 4K monitor. Have no issues - runs really smooth.
As Mac OS is not Windows, but a misconfiguration could happens!
So best practice -> reinstall your Mac (you would not regret this step). And it isn't as much time consuming if you prepare a USB stick with Mac OS installer data.

Thanks for the info.
I'm on a MacBook Pro M1 Max (64GB). As I understand, Capture One isn't very well optimized for Apple silicon, so this could explain at least part of the difference. Also, Capture One is less sluggish when I use the Open with Rosetta option, which only appears to confirm the lack of optimization.
As for a reinstall, it isn't the installation of the OS itself that's time consuming, it's installing everything else – assuming you mean a complete wipe and reinstall of everything on the computer.

Yes - Tabula rasa!
That's the best (and fastest) way to eliminate most of hidden software problems.

I just reinstalled everything on my computer (two days is what it took). Though I'm glad I did it as I got rid of a few other things in the process, Capture One is equally unresponsive – when switching between folders and tool tabs, applying colour tags, etc.
I checked the catalogue database for issues in DB Browser for SQLite, and nothing appears to be wrong with it.
My conclusion so far is that the issue is with Capture One and not with my catalogue nor with my computer.
