How much memory do you comfortably use on the Mac M1 M2?

I think buy Mac mini M2 Pro 12CPU,19GPU, 2TB SSD.

I am confused. 32GB or 64GB of memory?

 

I currently have a MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16GB and it is swapping and sometimes the c1 freezes for 5-10 seconds.

I only have C1 running when I work. The display is 4K x 2.

 

How much memory do you comfortably use on the Mac M1 M2? Thanks.

    I have a MacBook Air M2 with 24 GB (and a 1 TB SSD) and it works very well, even with other stuff open such as memory hungry apps like Safari or Chrome. The Mac Mini M2 Pro comes either with 16 or 32 GB memory. (The M2 with 8, 16 or 24). YouTube channel Artisright (https://www.youtube.com/@ArtIsRight) has very detailed and real-life reviews – as opposed to many theoretical benchmark-based tests – that may shine some light on your config. He's a pro photographer and he always includes Capture One in his tests, as well as the Adobe suite.

    Seeing your config (with fast SSD and quite some ram) I am a bit puzzled as to why this freezing happens – maybe it's the 4k setup. Take a look at https://bjango.com/articles/macexternaldisplays2/ on how resolution and pixel density works and do some further research on scaling. From what I read in different articles on the topic, I suspect the specific setting of your two-4k setup may cause problems. Seeing how much memory I have left on my MBA M2 (with 24GB) and iMac Retina 5k Late 2015 Quad Core i7 with 40 GB and with dozens of tabs open in Safari and Chrome (both using up gigabytes of RAM) as well as other apps, I can't imagine you run out of memory, especially if you quit all other apps.

    Hi Erik, thanks for the information.
    I listened to your opinion, looked at YouTube and display descriptions, and thought 32GB would be enough.
    The display is showing at 1:1. So I think the GPU load is low.

    Agreed, 32 GB will be fine. Also – and this is a recurring theme on this and other channels – it seems C1 has some way to go in capturing (no pun intended) the power of Apple's M architecture. Good luck!

    Yes, I think so too.
    However, in my environment using C1 causes him to memory swap and sometimes he freezes.

    I bought a new Mac mini 32GB and posted on this thread if the problem was resolved. (probably 2-3 weeks later)

    I have no apple silicon yet but thought that 16 GB would be enough for “Normal” raw processing.

    I am then curious Tomo how big files you are working with when swap is required ?

    M2 Pro supports "only" 32GB, if you want 64GB you should go on M2 ULTRA.

    I see ArtisRight is mentioned in a lot of forums and looking at this video makes me wonder why?  Nothing there that is very helpful to me.  Way too long and too abstract.

    I bought Mac mini M2 Pro 32GB 2TB. But sometimes C1 freezes.
    Memory compression is occurring. Swaps happen occasionally.
    I handle hundreds of RAW files of photos taken with Canon EOS R5.
    There is no problem as cost performance.
    If the C1 doesn't improve, I'd like to get the M3 Max 64GB next year.

    Since I am interesting in upgrading from my m1 Mac mini 16gb I am interesting in: could you say how is m2 pro behaving with your raw files when you apply style preview with two layers adjustments? Anyway does any updates fix your problem????? Thnx

    I have a 15" M2 Macbook Air with 8GB RAM.  Works fine.  Just don't have a lot of other things open at the same time so you can devote the memory to your photo editing.

    I think there's a problem with your setup. I have an M2 mini 8gb and an M1 air 8gb. C1 works fine on both, no freezing and edits are instant. Exporting takes a while but I don't mind that.
