Updating File Locations
We have just lost one of our RAID's and with it well over 150,000 photos.
Thankfully we have a backup but now when selecting images we get the problem that the Volume is missing (which it is), because of what else is on the backup RAID we cannot rename the volume, so we are left with having to re-import the images again, but this in itself will cause a major problem,
1. It would take someone bloody years to do this and then also remap the Keywords.
2. There are a lot of cases where I no longer know what the photo is so will not know the name or the person in the photo or the place it was taken, let alone any other references that were worth keywording.
3. The backup of the Photos are very different, the version that died is a lot smaller as we removed unwanted photo from it but never choose to do this on the backup, I would theefore only like to connect to the photographs that are in the old database.
Is there an easy way to do this or have I now got a nightmare that will be a total change of career time?

A symlink where oldvolumename -> newvolumename ?

Thanks but this does not work.

Hi James,
have you tried to relocate the fotos? Simply right klick on the (missing) Raid, select Locate... and navigate to then new drive. Then let C1 work. This should remap your fotos to the new drive.

But make a backup of your catalog first.

You did not mention it but can we assume your catalog is not stored on the dead RAID or backup copy but still alive e.g. on your internal drive?
You could also copy your images from the backup to a new drive, RAID or not, and give this new drive the old volume name?
As far as the obsolete images are concerned, they are not in the catalog, right? You want to delete them from disk, correct?
- You could copy the catalog e.g. to catalog_temp. Then, in this temporary catalog, select all_images, remove any filter.
- Give them all a color. Then syncronize the top folder(s) and add the images not know by that catalog (these are the obsolete ones). They won't have a color (exclude adjustments to be sure)
- After that, flter all images which don't have a color tag (the obsolete ones) and delete them from disk from within that catalog_temp
- Delete catalog_temp

Yes the Catalogue is on my System Drive, the RAID which is NAS Storage and obviously External and at present the main RAID which was 10 x 12Gb Drives is Offline and waiting for funds to be available to get a replacement NAS Box from Synology, the only other RAID's that I have are much smaller and do not have a complete backup of the main RAID so I am assuming that I have possibly lost around 60,000 images that at present are currently lost and hoping that they can be recovered from the drives in the near future, I am trying to pull over certain days that I know that I need from the smaller RAID's to what will be my internal storage until it is filled, but at present, it seems hit and miss as to what C1 seems to allow me to do, when they import it seems OK, annoyingly all of the keyword data and colour tags which both are VERY important to the way that we work are not available in the backups, and as most files are .DNG format I do not understand why, the other issues that I have is that I cannot apply new keywords to the files where I know what they are because all I get is the ever helpful and totally useless.
And when this happens I have noticed that I also cannot apply colour tags.
We have spent now around 2 weeks trying to get this working and getting frustrated, cannot understand why it works on some dates and not others, and not just .DNG, but also JPG's, PNG's and HEIC's.
The actual editing features are secondary to us, the important thing has always been that we can instantly find photos or images relating to a certain job, normally in seconds, and at least in other software you get an error that is not at all blank and useless.
Thanks for the help but we have been getting more and more annoyed with C1 over the last year and the lack of good delepment has basically left the software wanting, for us Database / Catalogue Management is the MOST important thing and we have always found it lacking in this area, now when running into a total nightmare of a problem we are finding brick walls in the way and none of us can understand why.
It has also just been pointed out to us that another software does not throw up any errors, it imports the dates along with keywords and colour tags, the only problem is we left that company over 3 years back for phase one after we purchased a new P1 camera, I HATE paying subscriptions at the best of times and it always leaves a bad taste in the mouth when you do not use the software for a few months at a time but you still have to pay out for it monthly. If the management say move then we will and at the moment with very little moaning it seems, for us who are not power users, we do a job, take shed loads of images, create external content as well, mostly in Adobe CS6 packages that are so old but for us do the job, Its just a shame that we never bought a Lightroom CS6 version (if there was ever one).
We have worked out that by creating a new catalogue, and with it new keywords as well does seem to throw up a lot less errors, we still get the dreading and usless error shown above every now and then but not as much as trying to re-locate images to an existing catalogue. but we cannot remember the keywords that were used on some old jobs, the people in them or the name of the objects that we photographed, etc this means that we cannot search and cannot find what could be useful photos.
Sorry for the rant, but very fustraited, two weeks into a big problem, and all I taste is sickness in my mouth that I cannot get rid off.
I did like C1 and even though for us is is a poor cousin of LR when it comes to file management, the nice clean layout made some jobs nicer to do and therefore we were happy, maybe if we do part ways C1 will eventually work out that it needs to be Better than the rivals and not just OK.

All your keywords and color tags are stored in the catalog. If you import the images from the backup storage they don't have any keywords (as you figured out). IMO that's the wrong approach.
You say it is most important to find images based on keywords and color tags, so keep your old catalog, you will be able to find the images in the catalog even if they are offline because the RAID is gone. You can't zoom in or export them but at least you'll find the images with preview and file name.
As I said, make a backup of your catalog BEFORE you do any trial to get out of the situation (I hope you did two weeks ago) as you might possbly worsen the situation e.g. with new imports.
Try to present the image files from the backup with the same path as the original or try to locate the whole drive as Kassur pointed out, but don't re-import the images (with the exception maybe the obsolete ones as I described but save this step until you have all catalog images back to online).
