I had similar issues. I enabled 'Release shutter without card' and that fixed it for me.

i had similar concerns - until - Hold down spacebar and double click on the area you want to check focus. instant focus check. double click again and you return to full view. couldn't be quicker.

i'd also prefer to be able to view images smaller than the window size.
