some images flickering when moving sliders

Ventura 13.2.1, CO 23pro

Unexplained slow adjustments when editing some (not all) images. The preview flickers as the slider is moved. Very distracting and not pleasant to use.

I have refreshed previews. 

I have restored the catalogue from a backup.

It affects RAF and DNG equally.

Looking at Finder, where my original images and the catalogues are synced with iCloud, there is one little cloud icon (next to the main catalogue folder) which is transparent (i.e. not fully synced - I think) but I can't see where the individual files might be affected.

I am on a Mac mini M1 and hope for a nice smooth editing experience. Not jerky, flickering.

Any ideas much appreciated...

    By way of an update, if it of interest to anyone, I have discontinued using iCloud for the image database. I do not know whether it will be better, but I decided to keep the files locally, backed up with two local drives, plus a new subscription to Backblaze.
