Adding new camera models to Perpetual Capture One 22 for Nikon
I think I already know the answer, but thought I'd ask anyway. I've pre-ordered a Nikon Z8, which is not currently supported on Capture One 22 for Nikon. When the Z8 becomes supported by Capture One, will it also be available with my current version? I'm assuming it won't.
Appreciate some guidance.
Thanks,
Larry

Larry,
Extremely unlikely I would say.
I can only maybe a couple of times when that happened and both were related to cameras from C1 partner companies where the launch virtually coincided with the release of the next Mac/Win OS version and the related C1 update and I think the work for the cameras had already been done for the earlier version of C1 AND there was some other need to release a version update for the older version to fix some other problem that cropped up right at the end of the version lifecycle, possibly to do with retaining compatibility with the OS update(s) after some unexpected changes in the OS release(s).
The thing is though, if you have invested in a new camera at the end of the market where the Z8 sits, the cost of the upgrade for C1 is probably quite minor by comparison and should also come with at least some new functionality that might be of benefit to you.
Thinking in those terms may, possibly, make the answer less painful?
On the other hand it would be good for consumers, and perhaps also C1, if it became possible for most new cameras (and maybe lens profiles) to be loaded into selected older versions of the software where possible. I could foresee some situations whereby some sort of technology requirement was not available in the older version which might prevent or limit support potential, but generally the idea of making support available in older versions would seem to be a good idea.

Thanks to FirstName LastName and SFA. Appreciate the responses. First, I would say that the software works great (with one exception that I'll mention further down). I've had more of an issue with the marketing group and the way they introduce new version of Capture One. It started a few years ago when I bought my first version. Two weeks later a new version was introduced without warning. I ask if I could get the newer version since they hadn't provided any warning it was coming out. The answer was no. Then I've had an ongoing issue with the inability to add any plugins to my iMac and no solution from Capture One. Finally, I moved to Capture One Express for Nikon and used that until Capture One Pro for Nikon 2022 came out and upgraded several months ago. Now I'm faced again with either buying yet another version or submit to their subscription system. The rigidness (everything is either black or white) of the marketing department is annoying. Customer support is fine and they try to help.
I doubt they will add anything, including new cameras, to my current version. In the end I need the software mainly for tethering. If someone asks me about the software, I'll say it's very good, but if they ask about the value I've received, I'll not be as positive.

***Update*** - I was wrong!! Today I tethered my Z8 to Capture One 22 (for Nikon) and was pleasantly surprised! My Z8 was recognized, exposure changes were updated on the screen and I captured a tethered image! Outstanding!! Thank you Capture One! I will use version 22 for the rest of the year and then go to the subscription model around January.

I think First Name Last Name's AI compiler is missing a few lines of code! The problem was solved (it does work), but not comprehended by who/whatever Last Name First Name is! (lol)

Perhaps there is more useful info in the sponsored link?

I finally get it. "First Name Last Name" is an automated response unit. That's why I keep getting the canned answers even after it has been stated the problem has been resolved. Maybe this will help....
First Name Last Name > Ctrl-z (return)
First Name Last Name > kill%1 (return)
(lol)

Dear Larry,
can you use the full performance with your Z8 on CaptureOne22?
Although I got the latest version of C1 22 (15.4.3) LievView isn’t supported and RAWs aren’t transferred (just the jpgs worked).
Is there any way to fix this?Thank you!

Hi Rafael. I was premature in my assessment of what could be done with this version of the code. I'm seeing the same limitations you are. I've only been able to tether .JPG images from the Z8. If I choose raw, nothing gets saved or displayed. It's interesting that the software recognizes the camera as a Z8 and I can operate the shutter release from the app, but not much more.
I'm tired of all the artificial, black or white marketing decisions that are made. They make the perpetual software immediately obsolete. In this case, the Z9 is supported, but the Z8 (almost identical, same sensor, file structure, etc.) is not. How hard would it have been to add the Z8 and gain some good will at the same time?

Larry McNiff - The policy is very clear. They don't add support for NEW cameras to older software versions. A software version would be defined as "old" in this discussion as soon as a newer version has been released. You can argue all you want about what you want, but this is just the policy and always has been the policy and it's been the same for pretty much all RAW editors I know of, including legacy Lightroom (before subscription) and perpetual license Capture One. It's just the way the market works here. RAW support in newer cameras requires a new version of the software. If you don't have a license that automatically entitled you to that newer version (such as subscription), then you have to purchase the latest version to get the latest RAW support. That just is the way it works and not only for Capture One.
What has changed in the last year is that you used to get Capture One perpetual upgrades until the next annual major version was released, but that is no more. But, even when they were doing that, they STILL didn't add support for newer cameras to older software versions.
FYI, as a retired software developer/exec myself, I would say that there are both practical and business reasons for the policy to be the way it is. It's not an insolvable problem if they wanted to add RAW support to a few older versions in a semi-efficient (from a development point of view) manner and were willing to devote the development resources to do so. But frankly, they likely don't have any compelling business reasons to do so and the market has largely accepted things the way they and their competitors have been doing this for the last 10-15 years. Meanwhile they spend the development and testing resources that would be working on that on new features in the next version instead of this. Development resource are a zero-sum game. If you spend more on one thing, you will spend less on other things.

There are several things wrong about the previous post (now apparently deleted) on camera updates.
- Capture One for Nikon has been discontinued. It is no longer supported. It is no longer updated. The only way there even could be updates available for it were if you hadn't updated for more than a couple years and there was some update available from long ago that you just never installed. There have been NO updates to it since it was discontinued in 2021.
- There have been no updates to the perpetual licensed Capture One v22 since Capture One changed their perpetual license scheme in 2022 and since v23 was shipped in 2022. Capture One does not revise older versions once a newer version has shipped. Capture One does NOT add camera support to older versions. There are no updates that add support for recent cameras to Capture One v22.
Summary, if you have Capture One 22, the only way you get updates for recent cameras is to get the latest version of Capture One 23.
If you own a perpetual license for Capture One 22, then you will have to BUY a new perpetual license for Capture One 23. With the changes to perpetual licensing announced in late 2022, there is no longer any upgrade pricing for perpetual licenses. If you want a newer version, you just have to buy it from scratch as if you were never a user. There are occasionally sales/discounts offered (that apply to anyone) which can lessen the burden of buying a new license, but in the end, you just have to buy a new version - no more upgrade pricing.
If you have a subscription, then you are entitled to all upgrades as part of your subscription, so you just need to update to the latest version.
