Preferences > Image > Metadata??
Could someone please shed some light on these settings, preferably with case scenarios?
I use external software to add GPS data (Geotag Photos Pro 2) which works perfectly.
The images get imported into Capture One Pro 12, then I add the GPS data and use "Image > Sync Metadata" to update Capture One Pro 12.
I want to learn more about the settings in Preferences for Metadata.
Auto Sync Sidecar XMP: None, Load or Full Sync? I tried full sync but then my catalog seemed to always be busy doing stuff. Which one should I use?
Prefer Embedded XMP over Embedded IPTC. Should I tick it or not?
Prefer Sidecar XMP over Embedded Metadata. Again, should it be ticked or not?
I use a referenced catalog with the images on an external hard drive. Recently, I have been shooting, adding to sessions, then importing the sessions into the catalog. I nearly always shoot RAW but occasionally use RAW + Fine.

Full sync: as you have discovered, this means that Capture One gets very busy always checking that metadata is synced. Most users seem to recommend not using this option. Also see * below for another reason not to use it.
Load syncs metadata when you choose to do so.
None means no syncing.
Prefer Sidecar XMP over Embedded Metadata: if some other app (App X let's call it) also creates or records metadata, in XMP sidecar files, and the metadata is different as recorded in Capture One (perhaps an image is rated 3* in Capture One but 4* in App X, to take a simple example) then
- if you check this box, syncing changes what it says in Capture One from 3* to 4* because the XMP file's data is preferred.
- if you don't check this box, Capture One's rating is not changed from 3*.
* The other reason not to use full sync: if you are not careful, you can get very frustrated and confused because you set ratings etc in Capture One and they keep changing themselves back - the reason is generally that full sync is on and Capture One is set to prefer the XMP sidecar data, so it keeps checking, syncing, and changing it back.
Prefer Embedded XMP over Embedded IPTC: I am not so familiar with this option, but again it is to do with conflicts of different metadata recorded in different places. The online user guide has information here
https://help.phaseone.com/en/CO12/Organizing-Photos/Metadata/Managing-Metadata
(sorry - links don't seem to be working in the forum at the moment)
There you will read among other thingsCapture One can read and store metadata in the following four formats: Embedded EXIF, Embedded IPTC-IIM, Embedded XMP and .XMP Sidecar file
That whole page would repay some study.
