You can create a Capture One session (anywhere you like) and add the folder with your images as a session favourite: do that by navigating to the folder in question in the Library tab of Capture One then right clicking and choosing to make it a session favourite. If there are a lot of images in the folder, you may have to be patient with Capture One while it generates previews. If you have the images in a lot of subfolders of the folder in question, that may not be the best approach though, as you'd need to add each subfolder as a favourite. In that case, perhaps you should rethink your unwillingness to make a catalog with these images. You can create a catalog, then import into it the images you want. If you use them as referenced images, they don't have to be moved - set the destination as current location. Capture One then catalogues them in its database, and creates previews inside the catalog but without moving the original files. And in the import dialog, you can check the box to include subfolders. Again, be prepared to be patient while Capture One generates the previews.
