Opening and processing a single RAW file.
Is this even possible without having to create a session and the stuffing the file to be processed into a session? I have migrated to C1 from the Adobe Photoshop world and the inability to get right to work without prerequisites is annoying. What I want to be able to do is edit a NEF file and see the benefits of C1 software and compare the results to that of photoshop.

No, there must be at least one open session. You can browse/select/edit your files with LIBRARY - System Folders.

That's right. When you are in Capture One you are always either in a session or a catalog. But using a session does not need to involved anything like importing. You can just create or open a session, navigate in the Library tool to the folder and image you want, and edit.

One of the benefits of C1 for a RAW file is that it is a RAW convertor and so can work with a NEF file directly.
Photoshop, by itself, is not a RAW file convertor and so has a different purpose.
So it all depends on what your editing purpose is going to be.

By default you're in a session: just don't think about it beyond that. You can navigate to a single image in Capture One as you can in any software.
And as Grant suggests, Capture One is not a "PhotoShop alternative". Don't expect to be able to treat it like one.
