Mysterious 'pair raws & jpgs' setting

First, I did not know about this setting so you grabbed my attention. 😉

In general, when you shoot with the camera in 'raw + jpeg' setting, you end up with 2 files of 1 exposure in contrast to the more common 1 file per exposure situation. This potentially may cause problems further in your workflow because you have to ask yourself whether or not these 2 files need to be treated as 1 or as 2 exposures?

When you shoot to your camera's memory card, the camera gives the 2 files of the same exposure the same name (e.g. IMG_0001.*) but different extension. They are paired. When shooting tethered to Capture One, you can mimic this behavior (or not) with the setting 'Pair RAWs and JPGs' when you have a counter field in the naming format.

Next challenge is what to do when you bath rename with Capture One. Batch rename works by the sort order of your thumbnails. As a result, when you batch rename with the setting 'Pair RAWs and JPGs' enabled, a conflict can arise when you are not sorting by Name: Capture One can not pair the raw and jpeg file that came from the same exposure. Pairing is based on the file name.

    Workarounds are:
    1) if you are not shooting raw + jpeg, disable pairing
    2) if you do not desperately need the jpegs, stop shooting raw + jpeg and disable pairing
    3) if you are shooting raw + jpeg and need pairing, sorting other than by name and batch rename, set the sort order temporarily by name, batch rename and change sort order to your original state.

Thanks so much Paul for your response. I was surprised there was no information about it provided by Phase One. I was a little worried it was totally obvious so am very happy to have revealed something new!

Great news that it only applies if you're shooting raw + jpg. I wasn't certain this was the case or if it related to the inner workings of the software & it's thumbnails.

I never shoot raw + jpg so problem solved!

Thank you so much for clearing this up. It's bugged me for months!
