Problem with Import

Trialing CO8 and I'm having a bit of an issue. I can only import files from a memory card. If I go to import images from an external drive the files are dithered out and not selectable to be imported. These are RAF files from a Fuji XE-1.
Furthermore, when importing from a memory card if I don't choose to store the images in the Capture One Catalog on my local drive I get an error that the file is unreadable... What is going on?

    If you move the same files from the External Drive to the Local Drive, do you see the same behavior?
    It may just be the external drive, hard to say without all the details.

    Yes, unless I store the images within the local drive CO8 catalog they can not be successfully imported. I've tried loading the raw images to a local drive location and have the same odd behavior from the import dialog.
