Albums are a session feature. An album consists of pointers to the original images. Moving or removing the original images breaks the album. Also, the session file (Capture One.col45=default session file) could have become corrupt, breaking the Album as well.
If you use CO4 (not Pro) there is only one session, the default session, in the Capture One Library folder in your Pictures folder. With CO4 Pro/DB you can create your own session, each with its own session file. If you have a backup of your session file, you could restore it.

thanks, another flaw with the C1 instructions (wow, that info pdf is almost useless) in that it doesn't say that there is only one album available to nonPro users.

so does that mean that if i make an album and then go to another album folder, i lose the first album link?

ok, i know that's not the case as i have more than one folder in there that's still good. also, my sessions folder in the default folder in pictures has nothing in it and says the last time it was used was a year ago.

i think i might have a backup but i can't find where it is or should be or might be. why can't i control click on images or folders in C1 and get the link?

i'm so confused as to why anyone would ever want to use albums if the link is so hard to maintain or rebuild. what good are they?

Maybe I can take away one confusion: a session can hold more than one album.

ahhhh, ok, figured it out. i was thinking the albums folder held all the adjustments--i didn't realize the adjustments stay with the images. so i just dragged in the images which were missing and then delete the question marked images.

sorry, i should have tried that to begin with but thought i wouldn't get back my adjustments.

thanks for bearing with me ....

Can't reproduce that problem (deleting images in Album after having deleted the actual image). What did you do to delete the question marks from the Album?
