Synchronizing catalogs

Is there a way to synchronize catalogs on different devices short of copying over the entire catalog? I use a separate catalog for each year, and have copies on multiple devices for back up and archival purposes. The problem I have is when I decide to modify an older image it seems like I have to recopy the entire catalog for the archive. I would like to be able to push just the change. Is that possible?

  I've been using Dropbox to do that by keeping my catalog on Dropbox. I'm careful to quit CO on one computer before opening it on the other.
  
  But I don't know if this is a supported way to use a catalog.
