new to Capture One 5 and can't figure out something simple

    Indeed not necessary to duplicate files. Opening the folder with raw files is all you need to do. Check whether you have the proper folder selected.

    Thanks...duh. I actually didn't even understand that one was able to access the system files in the browser. so, what is the session business? like, why bother? I mean i understand it in tethered mode i suppose, but what's the point of an "untethered session"

    Organization, if you choose.
    The feature is there if you need it but you're not restricted to it's use.

    I have been using C1 5 Pro since last Fall. It took me awhile to understand its organization, which is actually very logical and straightforward. Sessions are a useful way to manage image collections. The real breakthrough for me was when I discovered how to use the "Move To" and "Favorites" folders, and I suggest that you do the same.

    C1 does not have the sophisticated cataloging functions that are available in some competing programs, but for many of us, it has all that we really need.
