GPS data gone after edit
Has anyone else had this issue or is there a fix? I am on a Mac with Snow Leopard and EM2 2.0.2. When I edit a photo (crop, straighten, etc) and save, the GPS data gets deleted. I reinstalled version 1 on a PPC with Leopard an the problem is there as well. I don't remember having the problem prior to 2010. I wonder if an Apple update along the way caused it.
Thanks

I contacted support and they claim that this is the expected behaviour since they don't write out GPS data. I would think that erasing it would be considered "writing". Dissappointed. 0 -
Desoto,
Although not an expert in Expression Media, I took a look at your case and don't quite understand the issue.
The image you have shown contains GPS data, it is then cropped and saved. The resulting file retains the GPS data as does the original saved in a separate location of your choosing.
The only difference between the two is that the original has the GPS data saved in the actual JPEG file, where the image that you cropped has the GPS data saved in the Catalog. Nothing has been deleted, the GPS data has simply not been carried over and written INTO the new JPG you created.0 -
If it is a jpeg file and you have synced the GPs data to the original jpeg file in EM2 then it will be in the cropped version as well.
The thing is when you import the new image into EM it will not show the GPS data in the annotations field even though it is there, what you have to do while the image is selected is bring up virtual earth and click on the pin, this will re-write the longitude and latitude back to the annotations panel, it was never lost just needed writing back and just another strange quirk of EM. 😊0 -
Drew,
I realize the original can be saved (I don't), I just prefer the GPS data remain in the file after editing/saving. I guess it is a philosophical issue. That was one thing I liked about EM vs other DAMs. I don't really want my originals. I just want to straighten, crop, and save without losing the GPS data. I don't want to have to export images every time I need one for something. I just don't get why they won't write out GPS data. They write out the other metadata. What is so special about GPS data? I realize there can be a privacy issue but I should have a choice.
Paul,
I add the GPS data as I unload the photos from my camera with GPSPhotolinker. Then I import them into EM. If I use EM to fill it in, it still doesn't get written to the image.

Brendan,
In reviewing your support case it shows that you have chosen to "Save in Version Folder". This saves the original image with a different naming convention.0 -
Thanks for noticing. I thought I had turned that off.
