You can also change the size with the [ and ] keys.

Thanks for your suggestions - seems that it's not possible to assign it to the mousewheel. I've assigned it now to < > on a German Layout Keyboard so I can keep my fingers close to the alt and strg keys for panning / zooming with the mouse wheel and then adjust the size of the tool without getting the right-click dialogue in the way to adjust the size.

    Maybe, this is an idea?

I use a ShutttlePRO v2 controller and have assigned the big wheel in the middle to produce "[" and "]" output (depending on whether it is turning counter-clockwise or clockwise).

This not only makes changing the size of spot areas quick and intuitive but the same applies to the brush size as well. Using a modifier key, one can then also use the same wheel to adjust the hardness of the brush.
