Rookie question on RAW conversion
Hi there,
I am "advanced amature" looking for RAW conversion software for my Ricoh GR Ditigal IV camera. I installed trial versions of C1 Express and Lightroom 3 to see which one I like better (for image processing before printing in a lab). I found both apps fine, although C1 Express price tag is more reasonable for an amature photographer from my point of view (129 USD vs. 299).
The problem is that C1 did not deliver on its "better colors" motto. I made that conclusion after comparing resulting TIF images with an "original" JPG file produced by the camera, the only processing that I performed was to resize the image and save as TIF with the same color space and (default) settings. I liked the output of Lightroom more then that C1 since latter image is kind of yellowish (I looking at it from a notebook and I did not use any calibration device). And Lightroom image looks more like JPG file produced by the camera.
I would like to invest into C1 because I found it good for my purposes, but I am really concerned about colors in resulting image. My guess is that Lightroom has built-in support for my camera color profile. Any thoughts? I would say that the difference is not drammatic, but I would like to avoid unnecessary color corrections if I could because I am not very good when it comes to selecting color temperatures, etc.: I always find it rather difficult to make a decision 😕
JPG image produced by the camera, I quite like it. Unfortunately I did not plan a proper test, so this image is shot under f 2.2 1/125 while RAW file f 2.8 1/60

C1 output

Lightroom 3

P.S.: If I look at histogram in Lightroom for both processed RAW images I can see that C1 histogram is "slicker" that Lightroom one. The latter has more colors and less dark colors then C1 output and JPG, although latter image is a different shot too.

NNN634633789425528150,
Unfortunately the links to your images don't work ☹️
I don't think the album "RAWConversion" is public
However, from your description there is one main factor that gives me pause...
As a base you are comparing the results of a RAW file to the results of a JPG from the same shot. A JPG produced in Camera is just a different conversion of the RAW data. Just as Capture One is one type and Lightroom is another.
If you like the base results of what Lightroom gave you over what the base results Capture One has provided then who am I to argue. However, each software is going to take the RAW and interpret it as it sees fit. Our interpretation of your File will certainly be different from what Lightroom thinks it should be but it's worth noting that getting a specific result from Capture One or Lightroom is completely possible and that is the beauty of RAW conversion. If you like a specific look you can create it and save a "Style". Then apply that Style to all your images as a starting point.0 -

My bad, I fixed the links in my post above. As a base you are comparing the results of a RAW file to the results of a JPG from the same shot. A JPG produced in Camera is just a different conversion of the RAW data. Just as Capture One is one type and Lightroom is another.
Yes, thanks for the explanation, I understand that.If you like the base results of what Lightroom gave you over what the base results Capture One has provided then who am I to argue. Right, I suppose that it boils down to support of specific camera color space, doesn't it (the way C1 transforms camera RAw data into actual RGB or Adobe color space)? Do you support Ricoh GR Digital IV? I did find this kind of information for Nikon or Canon, not for Ricoh though. I understand that Ricoh is kind of a small player, nevertheless it would be very helpful.... but it's worth noting that getting a specific result from Capture One or Lightroom is completely possible and that is the beauty of RAW conversion.
That is true, although I would like to minimize my manual optimizations especially that I did not decide on whether I want to invest into calibration hardware for my screen. And without it I am not quite sure whether my color corrections are good or not. I am more inclined to do sharping, noise reduction, cropping, resizing or fixing obvious white balance issues. Otherwise I would expect camera to do this job for me and produce JPG files, at least that is what I paid for. I may want to adjust colors in an image for artistic reasons, but I am not that good yet.
I would also expect PC software to make a better job with noise reduction vs. camera built in engine because of camera hardware limitations. If you like a specific look you can create it and save a "Style". Then apply that Style to all your images as a starting point.
Well, this is something I expect from the C1 when it comes to camera color profiles support. Having to apply it manually may also do, although I am not sure whether I can use/create something universal for any kind of white balancing conditions. Is it supported in Expression version anyway?
And thanks a lot for the prompt reply, this is really impressive 😲0
