Which version of C1?
What sort of NEF file?
i.e. Which camera and does it have any special features used?
Or can you edit OK EXCEPT for the ability to add a layer?
What are you doing in order to try to add the layer?0 -
It's a raw nikon d750 nef file. i just payed for and download capture 12.0.3 64bit.
it opens the picture from the raw nef file, I see now in the layer box, it does not have a background layer...i do have this same pictures in jpg and tiff format and have no problem. so i guess layers dont like playing with raw files?0 -

And this is the regular "Pro"-variant in the sense that it is not limited to a specific camera maker (Sony, Fuji, Phase), right?
The regular C1 Pro for Windows works with NEF and layers for me. You should probably get in touch with support.0 -

Layers are fine with RAW files - this is, after all, primarily a RAW convertor program!
That you don't seem to see a 'layer' named 'Background' is unusual.
This is the default non-layer (despite the terminology) interpretation of the file without which nothing else will work. Indeed normally you would simple not see any representation of the image or some message icon that indicates a problem.
If you can share a file via a sharing people could take a look at it and try to suggest things.
Or simply log in to the Capture One account you created when downloading and create a Support Case to obtain assistance and advice from the C1 Support Team.

C1Pro works with nef files. Can you post a screenshot to show what you are seeing?

I brought the pro fujifilm software. which the raws are RAF files, and the program has no problems with these files at all.
but i had some other camera brands in the past Canon and Nikon these raws files NEF and CR2 are the ones giving me problems, don't know if Capture One is a one RAW files system or maybe i missed something when down loading it, I made sure all updates were in installed, is there a working around for the NEF, CR2 or will i need to convert these files?
thanks gary0 -

Gary,
The basis of the Fuji version of C1 is that it only supports Fuji RAW files and therefore comes with a reduced price for the benefit of Fuji users with camera models that are supported. (as agreed between Phase One and Fujifilm)
There is a Sony only version as well.
And If one buys a Phase One camera there is a DB (Digital back) version that can be used for Phase family backs and is free.
To work with RAW files from all manufacturers you need the full Pro version of C1.
There are a few cameras (usually older cameras or less popular models or cameras from other Medium Format manufacturers) that are not supported but these are few.
You can check the Release Notes of the FAQ section of the support area of the Capture One web site for a complete list of supported cameras together with any special notes that might apply to them.

Capture One site is just confusing to me... Capture One Pro , states up to 500 camera support, while Fuji Pro supports up to 35 Cameras, what cameras i don't know... I guess at this point, i an staying with Fuji camera anyhow, so i will just convert NEF and CR2 files, that Fuji Pro can work with. I don't have these cameras anymore, only the files.

Converting to TIFF should work, converting to DNG probably not.0 -
