Capture One quits and locks up 9 times out of ten!
Hi, I'm a new Capture One user and am having no end of trouble with the free trial.
Coming from Lightroom I've imported folders into a new catalogue which quits constantly or fails to get past the first opening sequence. I'm on an iMac with 40Gb of RAM and I'm running the latest OS 10.14.5. I have a core i5 with a Radeon Pro 580 8GB card.
It's incredibly frustrating as I'm keen to get away from Lightroom but cannot even do the simplest of tasks. I've stopped sending the crash reports as they pop up every time I try and open it.
Any help would be appreciated,
Ben Wolff

Hi Ben,
Did you move the app to the applications folder and open it from there, or do you open Capture One from the image disk on your desktop?

Since downloading your software for the first time a week ago, I have launched it approximately 40 times. It’s crashed nearly every one of those times instantly. The times when it hasn’t done so, it’s crashed when I try and click on something. I’ve created 6 different catalogs and each one reacts the same. It’s not looking good as a Lightroom replacement which I was really hoping it would be. Ben Wolff 0 -
Hi Ben,
Did you try to reinstall it ?

Did you install it as per installation instructions?
Have you followed the link that Christian provided in order to obtain assistance from the Phase support team?
Bear in mind that this is a User to User forum not a primary and personalised support channel.

After I installed C1, one of the first things I messed around with was creating several sample catalogs and trying to place them in different directories. After that the program got very buggy especially when I tried to import a large Lightroom catalog. I deleted C1 along with all of its support files (I use an 'App Cleaner & Uninstaller' program for that). When I reinstalled C1, and let it use its default catalog I was able to import my 40K photo LR catalog with mostly good results. I'm not totally sure the free version which I am starting with can use multiple catalogs. 0 -

It is not really intended to work with multiple catalogues as far as I am aware, the idea being to keep things simple.

Actually, I think it is designed to work with multiple catalogs. In fact, I often work with 2 opened simultaneously and am able to do things like copy adjustments from an image in one catalog and apply them to image(s) in the other open one. That's one of the many things I like about C1. 0 -

The Pro versions are, but not the Free Express versions the OP advised as being used.

You definitely can have more than one catalog opened at the same time in COP. How do you copy adjustments from an image in one catalog and apply them to image(s) in the other open one?0 -
I just click the "Copy Adjustments" arrow in the "from" catalog and then the "Paste Adjustments" arrow in the "to" catalog. The contextual menu options also work for me. 0 -

Unless I misread, he's using the trial which, if I recall correctly, is the Pro mode until it expires. Isn't that right?0 -

Some confusion as we seem to have 2 posters apparently using the same thread for slightly different discussions.
My Response was to Larry_M who seems to be suggesting he is selecting the 'Free' version to free trial first.
I could be wrong but IF that was the case he might see the limitation.
As for the default start mode - I guess it picks the first option on the list - can't remember. That used to be the Free version at one point but I think for V12 the order of selection changed. Either way the comment about the Express version may help someone.
The Original OP's load problems sound similar to those I recall from some years back when users (using MACs) had not followed the full installation instructions and ended up with a compromised partly 'working' system. But I'm not a MAC person so have no idea if that might still be a potential problem.
I hope that explains and contains the possible confusion.

I will start a new thread for the issue of copying adjustments between catalogs. 0 -
Still locking up despite numerous new catalogs created. I've been sending crash reports and file logs to Capture One relentlessly. My trial will be over soon and I haven't even had it working correctly for any amount of time. I really want to get it sorted as I want to replace Lightroom with it. If only I could get it working. Ben,
If you want personalised support you need to create a Support Case rather than just send the system semi-automated crash reports.
See Christian's early post for the link to the website page you require.
Are you absolutely sure you installed Capture One by following the installation instructions for Macs?0 -
Hi, I am getting personalised support. Not found a solution yet. Everything got installed correctly, twice! 0 -

Well, it's always nice to know what has happened and is happening at some points amongst the mass of less specific information.
I guess the rest of us can leave you to work things out with support and move on to our own activities now.0 -
Thank you so much for your help. Ben 0 -
Hi, thank you to anyone who has left suggestions as to what I can try to get the C1 Trial up and running without crashing.
I think I've made a breakthrough now. Basically I've made new folders in the same structure as my old ones and copied everything over manually. It looks as though C1 just didn't like the original folders. The new ones are exactly the same and in the same place except each folder has a 2 at the end. Weddings 2 W44 2 that kind of thing. Once everything is proved to be working I'll rename the old files with a 1 suffix or something and take them off line then just remove all the 2 suffix's. It all seems stable at the moment. For some reason C1 just didn't like not having created the folders itself.
Thank you again for the help. I am in contact with support and have sent several complete logs over too so they are looking into what might be the root cause.
Thanks, Ben0
