What's the difference between an activation code vs. a license key?

When I look in C1 under Help/Licence, the 'licence code' is shown and this was supplied to me when I purchased C1. Listed under the Licence window is also the 'Licence Code Activation History' and number of activations I have left. So under the licence I have I can 'activate' C1 on up to 3 computers.
There may be some differences related to subscription and perpetual licence models and the terminology they use but I have a perpetual licence and don't know much about the subscription model.
