Using an external SSD to store and work on photos

I am new to Capture One 20 and traditionally use an external SSD to store, save and work on my photos.  I have the system saving the file information on my iMac’s internal SSD.

Will this approach work with Capture One 20?  If so how do I set it up?

    I am using this setup as well. All my catalogs and images are stored on an external Samsung T5 SSD that is connected through USB-C to my MacBook Pro. 

    Just save your catalog to the drive. You can either store the images within the catalog or point to another location that is located on the drive. You'll find more information under Importing Images into a Catalog, specifically under "Importing images inside a Catalog (managed file option)" or "Creating a folder structure on import"

    Hi Bob,

    Capture One works most of the time on previews smaller than the RAWs. It uses RAW only for exporting adjusted images and when a 100% enlargement is needed (local corrections, for instance). IMHO, Capture One would work faster if you stored the catalogue on your internal SSD and the RAWs on an external SSD. And of course making copies of your external SSD and the catalogue regularly !

    I work only in sessions.

    Once the new RAW files are on the desktop, I leave them there to do
    the culling and the first PP because it will always be faster from there.

    The second step is to transfer that session ƒ to my archive — Thunder-
    bolt 3, 5TB drive, that is automatically scheduled for back ups. Any further
    work done from that peripheral will still be accessible & done fast enough!

    I'm not sure what you mean with that statement.

    I use both catalog and sessions.  My catalog has about 46K images.  It exists on my internal SSD and is currently 182 GB in size.  The catalog does not contain images.   They exist on an external SSD.  My session setup is similar.  Sessions and their standard folders are on my internal SSD.   I often work on the images when in the Capture folder.  The images are then moved to the same external SSD that contains the images referenced by my catalog.  I can work on them there, too.

    I've not run into obvious issues using such a setup.  As to how to set it up?  Create a catalog wherever you like. Import the images to a destination of your choosing.  Images need not be in the catalog nor do they have to be on the same disk as the catalog.

    Sessions are easier.  The session can be placed anywhere.  The session can reference folders on your system that can also be placed anywhere.
