    > Tony Leinster:  I have been unable to recover it

What steps did you take, what did you do, to recover it?

I have done nothing, I am asking for suggestions, I don't want to risk losing it by blindly pushing buttons.

Yes, but when you say you have been unable to recover it, did you try to do so and if so how? If the images are shown as offline, have you tried using the Locate feature? I assume that you back up your catalog, or backup your computer, so "blindly pushing buttons" is unlikely to be disastrous. (If you don't back it up, do it now before you try anything else.)

Where is your catalog file located on your computer? Where are the image files located?

Hehe, that's what they all say :-)

Just to complement Ian Wilson's answer:

First: If you haven't backed up the catalog, you should read up on it make sure you understand backing up a catalog and backing up image files. It is also good practice to regularly restore from backups at times when you don't need to. Just to prove to yourself that you (still) know how to do it to make backed up data land where you want it, and also to verify that your backups are good. Mr. Backup himself (Curtis Preston, look him up) used to say that anyone can back up, few can restore.

Second: There is a difference between catalog not found and image not found (image is off line). Which is it?

Thanks for the efforts but I think the problem is that for me the file structure is totally alien, so files are in odd places on the computer and also backed up to One Drive, I use C1 Exp to process RAW files (excellent) which I would then export to Lightroom for DAM. In Lightroom I can simply create a file within a year (date-Location) and then import to this directly. I cannot seem to do this in C1 E so probably best if I just let it import to wherever it wants, do my bit then export to LR straight away and ignore any file system C1 creates.

C1 still does the best job of demosaicing but for me needs a simpler import/ filing system, sorry:-(
