Perhaps you could tell us exactly how you are going about importing to the catalog. Step-by-step.

    Hi Ian

    Thanks for responding so quickly.

In my workflow, the finished images end up in the Selects folder in my Session.

To import the images into the Catalog, from within the Catalog :-

I Click the Import button (top left)

Import from is set to the Selects folder in my Session - the images to be imported are displayed

Import To is set to the folder in which my RAW files are stored (not stored in the Catalog itself)

Collection is set to Recent Imports Only

Naming Format is set to Image Name (images are batch named in the Session)

    Include Existing Adjustments is ticked

No other Import options are selected

I select the images in the Selects folder I want to import, usually by ticking Pick All

I click on the Import button (bottom right)

The import process runs through as normal, but only the primary variant of each image is imported into the Catalog.  The RAW files are correctly imported into the selected RAWs folder.  The above is exactly as I was doing it in previous versions of Capture One, and having looked carefully I am unable to see that any of the additional options on the Import screen introduced in version 23 need to be used for my method.

Hopefully you can shed some light - I feel like I am missing something obvious, but can't see what!

    Thanks,

    Adrian.

I should have added that the adjustments I made on each Primary Variant are imported into the Catalog correctly.  So the Primary Variants are imported fine, but any other variants created while editing in the Session don't get imported.

Your workflow sounds quite like mine, with one major difference.

I also start work in a session. When I have finished with the work on the images, I import the Selects to my master catalog. But I don't import them to another location. I just use Add to Catalog, and leave them where they are in the Selects folder. Each Selects folder becomes a folder in my catalog. Of course I make sure that I have checked the option to include existing adjustments. I don't think I have ever  encountered the problem you have mentioned. You might like to try my way, perhaps on a small test session, to see what happens.

The only other thing that I can think of is to ask whether you are sure that only the primary variant is imported. Is it possible that the variants are collapsed into one? If I click the button at the top left of the primary variant (as shown here)...

... they collapse into one, like this.

Note the slight difference in that symbol - in the first (expanded) version the small triangle points to the left, and in the second one it points to the right.

I may be telling you something you already know about, and be on the wrong track, but I though I would mention it just in case.

    Hi Ian

Definitely worth the mention, but yes I am sure that only the primary variant is being imported, it isn't the case that the others are collapsed behind the primary.

I will try your process in a test situation and let you know.

It really is most odd - I have been working this way for years without a problem (other than the occasional adjustment mask being in error which started happening with version 22 and which the team at Capture One know about but similarly haven't been able to replicate).  On my system here it is something that only started to happen when I upgraded to version 23.  It affects Session to Session imports too, which I discovered when I started testing my issue out fully.  I have even completely uninstalled version 23 and downloaded & installed a fresh clean install, but that made no difference.  It is such a basic function that if there was an issue in the software I am sure the support team would have been deluged by tickets, so I am beginning to think it must be something specific to my set up here, but really don't know where to start to work that one out.  I photograph plants & gardens commercially, volume of images quite high but thankfully not like a wedding photographer, but anything that causes a lumpy workflow is really difficult.  Currently my completed images are just building up in the session Selects folder but I do need to get them moved into the Catalog so they are available to me for retrieval etc.

Thanks for getting back to me with you thoughts on it.  I will let you know the outcome of the test import using your process.

    All the best,

    Adrian.

    Hi Ian,

I have now tested the 3 "Import To" options for importing into a Catalog:-

    (1) Add to Catalog (your workflow)

    (2) Copy into Catalog

    (3) Copy RAW files to another location (my workflow)

On my system method (2) & (3) only import the primary variant. (1) imports all variants.

Essentially, and from what I can see from my testing, since upgrading to C1 23 the two options that involve copying the RAW files no longer function properly.  Certainly (3) was functioning properly before.

It suits me to have my Catalog and my editing Session on my smaller but faster SSD C: drive and my RAW archive folder on my larger D: drive, so I don't want to change my workflow.

But testing the other two Import options has given useful insight which I can pass back to the C1 support team.

    Thanks again,

    Adrian.
