tethering doesnt work on usb port, only usb c

i have switched recently from windows laptop to mac mini m2. never had a problem on windows to connect canon 5ds and tether with c1. i use tether tool cable with regular usb. when i plug it to mac mini i cannot connect. i have managed with adapter dongle to connect to usb c. although it not as easy as on windows. i have to perform some kind of combination of plug/turn on camera to make it work. why cant it just work with no fuss, as on windows? how to make it work on usb port without usb-c dongle?
