Nope, effectively the exe and required files get replaced. I have not seen any degradation in performance.

As well as what SFA said, you could also try regenerating previews, and also try changing the preview size in the preferences. Like SFA I have never seen this behaviour before.

You don't have to uninstall. I installed over the top and it works just fine.
