mask brush not active

I know it's going to be a simple error, but for some reason my mask brush is no longer active and I can't figure out what I've done. I think I've hit short cut key, but not sure. Operating on a Mac system, so if anyone can advise that would be appreciated. Thanks

  M is the default mask on/off shortcut key.
  Click and hold the brush icon in the layers tool tab and you will discover more mask viewing options.
