Switcing from LR to CO question

Hello,

A few months ago I tried making a complete switch from LR to CO by migrating my catalogs. I did not like the results because too many edits were not brought over, mainly B&W images. I also had a problem with virtual copies. I wound up abandoning the migration.

I am ready to try again however this time my thought was to keep my existing images in Lightroom and start fresh with Capture One and new images. I would point Capture One to my existing Lightroom folders so everything would still be in one place. Since I'd be canceling my Adobe subscription I would not be able to use the Develop module but could still use LR to view my old images (not sure if printing or exporting would still be an option in LR). If wanted to edit old images I would start over in Capture One. I know I'd loose Photoshop without a subscription so I'd find a replacement.

I was wondering if this sounds reasonable and if there is anything I might be missing as far as managing images, catalogs etc.

    Hi Michael,

    That's what I did, but I started from LR 5.7 (now I have LR 6.14 that I don't use any longer) and import the LR catalog into C1 (v8 at this time).

    Integration of the old Lightroom Catalog into Capture One catalog was automatic for me, as I used the hierarchy of my image storage disk. And it is a good idea.

    Keeping your old images with Lightroom and editing the new ones with Capture One is also the more sensible solution. And editing in Capture One an old image which was already edited in Lightroom is very motivating, as the results are different. A new way of discovering old images.

    Hi, another option here :

    I had been a long time user of LR and made the switch when Adobe wanted to force us onto the subscription model.

    I was very happy with the DAM aspect of LR so decided to use the option of importing my RAW images into LR and then exporting those I wanted to work with to Capture One V10.  They are then re imported as TIF files for keywording , exporting as required and printing.  I then delete the untitled Capture one session.   

    I initially thought I would then slowly standardize on Capture One but this workflow seems to work fine for me so I have stuck with it especially since I had a lot of J Friedl's plugins and several others.  My LR catalog is 70,000 images and I use LR 6.5 so can still develop if required (usually just cropping for specific targets) .  Also my experience of migrating the LR catalog was a disaster so I gave up on that.

     

    All we need now is a fix to 20.0.3 to allow the Open/edit with to work again!!

    I've started adding folders and am finding some images that are worth another look. Then there are those which pose the question, what was I thinking!

    I have notice two things. First, after importing a folder some tif images edited in Photoshop are not being imported. I had the same problem when I tried migrating the LR library a few months ago. I do not see any import settings which would effect this. I'm not sure if this is to be expected.

    The other unexpected result is that star ratings are being imported too. I do not use xmp files so I assume that at some point I saved the metadata to the image. Unfortunately the star ratings are not up to date but that can be easily fixed. I am wondering if in LR I write my metadata to an xmp file, will CO read it and save that data in the library. If so, what will happen if I delete the xmp files later on.

    Yes however I also have some color Photoshop tifs that have not come in too.

    I assume the tifs are not even visible in the import dialog, right?

    There is something with these files C1 dors not like, if you compare the file properties of a tif which could be imported with a tif which could not side by side, can you see a difference? E.g. Locked, any other property.

    Another idea: Can the failed tifs still be opened in PS?

    The problem was that these tifs were saved with a LAB profile which Capture One does not really support. Read only at best.
