Detail Extraction Tip

I had been playing a bit with Pixmantec's new raw converter RSE and like many have been impressed with some additional fine detail rendered by this app. On the same token the color with RSE is terrible.

I think however you can have your cake and eat it too. I was playing around with Photoshop CS2's noise reduction tool and found out something fantastic. The last slider in the CS2 Noise reduction dialog box called \"Detail Sharpening\" seems to be an identical algorithm to the detail extraction found in RSE.

Try this out;

Set CO sharpening to amount 18, radius 3, Noise reduction slider in preferences set to the least amount. Develop an image. In CS2 apply the noise reduction filter with all noise reduction sliders set to 0 (zero) and detail sharpening set to ~60.

Bingo! - the detail is identical to RSE's default settings with the added benefit of the perfect color from Capture one and Magne's profile.

You guys have to give this a shot it will definatly put a smile back on your face.

I agree. Accurate colour is the one reason I'm sticking with Capture One LE even though there are several alternatives now (some of which are free). After several years of scanning film and trying to get the colours right, it's a real joy with digital photography to never have to do colour correction.
