why are my raw files vibrant and processed tiffs flat?
I am having problems with processing raw files. I am shooting tethered with a canon markII 5d. Raw files look good and vibraint processed 16 bit tiffs look dull and flat. I did calibrate my monitor with the color munkie. Any help would be appreciated .

Sounds like a color management issue, but you should provide much more detail about your workflow like: version CO4, OS X, output profile, application you view output TIFF with.
And: have you tried 8-bit TIFF, other output profile like sRGB, JPEG?0 -
Paul, I am using a mac pro running osx 10.5.6 i am running c1 pro 4.7. I am shooting tethered processing images in c1pro then viewing and retouching in photoshop cs3. I have also viewed the photos in c1pro they look the same. I have tried 8 bit and 16 bit color tiffs and jpegs and get the same results. I have reset my c1pro back to the default settings to make sure it was not something i set but same results. I thought color management also i just started to use the color munkie photo 1.1.0. to profile my laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 0 -
Stephen, thanks for the additional information. If I understand properly, the images look flat in PS CS3. Let's focus on the output profile, that is the color space you assign to your TIFF files. How is this set (embed camera profile, AdobeRGB, sRGB to name a few options).
Next, how are the Color Settings (Shift+Cmd+K) configured in PS CS3? What is your RGB working space and how is your color management policy set (Preserve Embedded Profiles for example) and how does CS3 respond to profile mismatch? It is all in Color Settings.0 -
Paul,
My output profile profile for capture one is adobe rgb(1998)
my color settings in photoshop are :
settings: north american general purpose 2
working space: srgb iec61966-2.1
cmyk:us webcoated
color management policies:
rgb: preserve embedded profile
profile mistmatch nothing is checked.
Would think my color profile i made with the color monkie would be the working space profile??
thanks again0 -
Stephen,
Technically this should work (with your current Color Settings). However, there is a mismatch in your configuration although I cannot pinpoint this as the culprit.
You output to AdobeRGB, but you have sRGB as RGB working space. In general, you should align your CS3 working space with your CO4 output. In short: in CS3 set RGB working space to AdobeRGB. See if this helps. But before you do that, try the reverse first: keep CS3 as currently set, and in CO4 use sRGB as output file for a change (just test). I am very curious to hear about the result.
The color monkie should not be the problem because both CO4 and CS3 should use the profile. I suspect this is not the case. I have some suggestions but I do not want to confuse with too many hints in one post. I'll come back after your reply 😉0 -
Paul, I did what you requested and its the same... i am open to any other suggestions you have. Still do not understand i never had this problem in the older version 3.8
Thanks stephen0 -
Stephen, are you familiar with the ColorSync Utility that comes with OS X (Applications -> Utilities)? In the Device list, Displays, look what is your monitor profile in the right pane (write it down for reference). You could try another profile temporarily (set to factory for instance). Depending on your settings you might need a logoff-logon or system restart to evaluate the effect properly.
What I try to establish is not the right color (factory profile does not give you the right color) but the same color in CO4 and CS3. If the factory profile does give the same color in both programs, there could be something wrong with one of them reading the calibrated profile.
Another option I have is to remove the preference files of CS3.
Another option is to fire up CO 3.7.9 if it is still on your disk and compare it to the CO4 workflow.
Sufficient options to keep you busy for a while. 😉0
