Laggy Performance Selecting Images

I'm having a real problem when I'm trying to select images individually or across a range. C1 hangs for a second and causes the beachball spin for about 3-4 seconds and then finally does what I asked it to do. It's starting to get a bit annoying. Is anyone else having these problems?
I've run activity monitor and there are not obvious processor spikes.
