    tourtelot,

I believe the Preference setting you refer to is for naming purposes only.
The Save you're selecting is saving image adjustment data.

Create your TIFF files using the Process Tab.
    The basic workflow is:
    > Select Thumbnail > make image adjustments > under Batch Editor click icon Process the selected capture

So that you will always know where the processed file goes, Click the icon: Change the current folder for processed images
and be sure to check the box
Always process images to associated image folder
and your TIFFs will always end-up in a Develops folder within your RAW file folder.

    Sincerely,

    k c

Thanks. I understand that even if I go to File>Save, the application will not save my white balanced raw as a .tif unles I \"process\" it. Is this correct? If so, what does the Files>Save function do and how about the auto-save upon quitting function. Sorry, I can't figure this one out.

    tourtelot,

Capture One is different from other software in that the RAW image file does not get edited in any manner. Original means it stays intact as captured.
The File > Save you're referring to will save all your image adjustment data within the .C1w file. This is the Work file / Thumbnail image. The data saved includes:
      White Balance
      Color
      Crop
      Rotation
      Exposure Sliders
      Film Curve
      Sharpening
      Noise parameters
      MetaData

There are also Preference settings that establish when these adjustment data are saved while working on a Session / Collection.
File > Preferences > Save Options tab.
A setting of Save when changing an image or excessive Saving may tax system resources.
