Multiple Exposures for one file

Hi everyone.

I'll try and describe what it is I want to do, then hopefully you guys can tell me if it's possible or if I'm an idiot for wanting to do it 😊

Basically I would like to have multiple exposures of the one RAW image. Given any RAW file I would expose for the foreground and the background and then re-combine in photoshop to achieve a higher dynamic range.

I've found that if I make a copy of the RAW file and then rename one copy, the two RAWs still end up sharing the same capture setting file (Im guessing that the hashing algorithm to determing the setting file name does not take into account the raw filename)

Is it possible to do this in C1? It seems like it should be possible, but I cant for the life of me figure it out.

  That's pretty much what I'm doing at the moment, but I'm after a way of retaining the settings for the 2 independent exposures for tweaking. Is this possible?
  
  I tried making copies of the file and renaming one of them, but C1 seems to realise they are both the same file even though the name is different, so they end up sharing a settings file. Do you know how C1 determines the name of the settings file? Is it based on the EXIF settings? If I could 'trick' C1 into making a new setting file then everything would be fine.

  I understand now. Without spending too much more time testing this, here is what I know... or think I know.
  Yes, it seems the file is kept unique by the Meta Data - Settings File. So, as you've discovered, Capture One still identifies a RAW and a Copy of a RAW as the same and writes image adjustment data to the same file. Remember, the WB, Exposure, and Focus Data are saved to the .C1w or Thumbnail file. These can be saved by using the pulldown Workflow > Selected Capture Settings > Save to Archive
  To get back these image adjustment data, just choose the Restore from Archive choice.
  
  Seems to me this will work. Rather than try to copy a RAW image to the same Session folder, copy the RAWs needed and make a second Session folder entirely. Then the .C1w files can remain the same name if in different Session folders, and archived to those same folders. Upon development of the files, just be sure they have different file names.

  Thanks again Keith. I went through that process last night and everything worked well.
  
  I think it would be nice to have a little more control of the settings files and where they are stored. Being able to specify their location (possibly even name) would make situations like this (and archiving) a much simpler process.
