Tethering: Unstable connection to camera

I'm using a Nikon D800 to tether directly into C1, but it somehow randomly and quite frequently jumps between tether and the default "transfer"-mode (where you can access the content of the CF or SD cards). I tried with different cables (short, long and active ones) even tried different ports on my pc, disconnected everything besides the keyboard and mouse, but no luck. Happens all the time. In most cases a simple restart of C1 does the job, but sometimes it just refuses to speak to the camera.

Has anyone experienced similar problems?

  Remove the Storage Cards and then the cameras only option is tethered. This should solve the problem entirely.

  Thanks for the quick response. Forgot to mention that I don't have any storage cards inside the camera when tethering. When the nikon has established a successful connection the "E" (error, no memory card) switches to "PC" (pc connection established). But sometimes, although the camera is physically connected properly and C1 is open, it stays in "E"-mode.
