Please help me with my settings on colour management...
Hello all.
First post here and hoping that someone can rescue me from a cloud of confusion on my various colour settings!
Might be easiest if I list my current settings and gear:
Using a Dell laptop with a good quality screen on Windows XP.
I now shoot RAW since gaining my Konica Minolta 7D camera, it's set to Natural sRGB (I see there is an option for Embed Adobe RGB)
Capture One Pro (love it) for making exposure, WB etc adjustments and then converting to Jpeg HQ.
I have noticed though that my saved jpegs in Windows looks darker and lacking the crisp look I had in Phase One. I do carry over the sharpness settings to the jpeg btw which is set at Standard, 100, 3.
Though I am reviewing this process as it feels ‘wrong’ to be applying this to all my images which vary greatly in type and content.
More settings for you to enjoy:
Monitor:
Adobe RGB 1998…I see there are others such as ‘KM 7D generic’, and ‘Phase One-PC Monitor. Any mileage in these?
Settings in Capture One:
Camera product-KM 7D
Camera Profile- KM 7D generic
Output, Web and proof all Adobe RGB (1998)
Monitor profile is greyed out, but reads Adobe RGB (1998)
Photoshop CS Colour Settings:
Custom. (should this be ‘PhaseOne Workflow'?)
Working Spaces: RGB-Monitor RGB-Adobe RGB (1998)
CMYK- Offset Print-euro
Gray- Gray Gamma 2.2
Spot-Dot Gain 20%
Colour management Policies: RGB-Off
CMYK-Preserve Embedded Profile.
Gray- P.E.P.
Ticks in all three option boxes also.
Phew! Hope you’re still reading this.
To be honest, this subject has always made me feel quite wary and has had me confused for too long now.
I am likely to upgrade to a full desktop PC later in the year whereby I will invest in a Spyder etc. for a new screen, but would love to get these bits of software talking the same language for now.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Nick (UK)

I posted this at Dpreview also as I was having no responses here.
Think I've got it (nearly) sorted now so thanks for looking in.
Hopefully, you agree with the advice given!?

Nick,
Color Management is a deep subject with lots to learn. There have been extensive discussions on the issue here on the Forum along with screenshots so be sure to do a search and locate these.
Knowledge Base article # 1882 from our web site will help as well.
http://support.phaseone.com/KB/Home/Sea ... nguageID=1
and article # 1996 discusses the automatic preference settings for Photoshop
done when installing Capture One.

In general, Adobe RGB 1998 is the profile mostly used for printing, especially when sending to lab that prints on Kodak photo paper.
sRGB is the choice for web display and/or for lab printing on Fuji paper.
Another good profile is ProPhoto RGB. Of course there are many profiles available and it truly comes down to taste or what you like the best.

The most important thing you can do is to make sure your monitor is set up right. That way setting you apply to images look right.
Having the monitor as Adobe is wrong for both Windows profile and CO.
If you have profiled the monitor (either using sofware and your eyes or a hardware calibration package) - the monitor profile in CO should be the profile that was created during calibration.
If you never calibrated your monitor, either use no profile or sRGB or perhaps a profile that comes with the monitor. But be careful as the profile that comes with monitor may not be set for neutral colors/contrasts.
But let CO decide for you. It will recommend which profile to use if the profile you are using for Windows doesn't match.

Just to say thank you before I forget.
Have got all my settings straight now with the help of a fellow drp member.
