Working with Sessions AND catalogs
I know I can shoot in sessions, and then manage/reference all of my sessions through one master catalog. This is how I would prefer to do things. However, if I do this, when I make any new edits in my master catalog, it does not seem to update the edit in the sessions folder:( I would think a workaround would be to do my editing in my sessions folder and then I would think the master catalog would be able to reference the new edits, but this does not seem to be the case. Am I missing something? I see where people use both sessions and catalog system together, but why would anyone do this if they can not make edits which sync?
My scenerio is that I shoot a lot of family trips and functions. I shoot in sessions because I like this for the portability, and I like to do edits on location on my laptop, then dump it to my main home computer/NAS and back it up. Each trip or function is a session. I often want to put photo albums together where I need to use photos from many different sessions, apply new edits, and export them all in .jpeg to one location. Other times I just like to pull an old session and do some additional edits on some old photos on my laptop. How can I use a catalog to manage my sessions in this manor?

Sessions keep the edit and all related data close to the original files.
Catalogs keep the data in the Catalog database.
One can import a session to a catalog and include the edit data as it was at the time if import but there is no edit sharing facility between the 2 methods. Indeed it might not be desirable in some workflows.
Likewise one can export form a catalog to a session but again there is no subsequent updating interface and the same comments as above apply.
From that point of understanding there are many approaches possible to deal with levels of edit sharing - but probably not one particular approach other then for the way that people often work with on the road sessions and back in the office catalogs, just as you do.
I work almost exclusively with sessions and tend to use the same notebook for everything - so I'm not the best person to advise on the nuances of road and office interfacing. But there are others who probably can provide you with strong guidance and as I recall there was a recent webinar about the options that might be considered so that might offer some suggestions.
