Just to add to this in the hopes of helping to identify the issue, I have the top of the line mid 2014 MBP with SSD. Trying to simply move from one thumbnail to the next in the browser takes about ...

Well that's unfortunate. This is the exact sort of thing that drove people form Adobe. Looks like I'll be on the hunt for a new photo app.Sigh.
