the curve tool in CO comming from Photoshop.

Hi I have been using Capture one for over a few months now and the one thing I still haven't gotten used to is the curve tool. I was recently editing a photo that demonstrates the difficulty I have been having. I have been trying to maximize the highlights in the this image by darkening the mid tones but without making the image to dark.

the lighter one was finished in photoshop just to bring out the highlights....easy to do. the darker one is only edited in CO and shows my difficulty in brightening the highlights without loosing the contrast in mid tones which I could not do using the curves or levels.....even with bringing the midtones down on the curve. I do realize there is a probably reason why the tools in CO are calibrated the way they are but I am wondering how some of you would to this only using CO.

And I have two questions:
1. is the darker image two dark in your eyes?
2. is the lighter image looking finished as far as editing?

Open to suggestions...and thanks!

  They look fairly close to me in terms of brightness on my older MacBook Pro and my new iMac Retina. The image on the right looks a bit darker. I think the lighter image looks better.
  
  If I was looking at that image in CO I would simply give the shadow HDR slider a nudge to the right. That should lighten up the shadows a bit while leaving the midtones a highlights alone.
