If you use a repair layer, there are two kinds: clone and heal. Clone should copy exactly from the source to the target. But heal will try to match the lightness of the copied material to the surroundings at the target. It sounds as though you have used Heal and expected the results you'd get with Clone. So you might get more the effect you want using the Clone option rather than the Heal option.

Alternatively, you could create a regular adjustment layer, then (with the new adjustment layer selected) click the ... menu and choose Copy mask from > [the repair layer]. That will enable you to adjust lightness, etc on the same area that has been cloned/healed out.

Thanks, Ian! I've used LR for several years now and am unhappy with their new subscription plan so am looking for a replacement, but it's going to take (quite?) awhile before I get used to the CO way of doing things.

It actually doesn't take long to figure it out. the first couple times you use C1 it'll feel a little unintuitive; but you'll soon be up to speed. Best advice to someone transitioning to C1 from another system: stop thinking in the language of Lightroom. it's English and French; you can convey the same thing, but you can't rely on the old one to help you with the new one.
