If you draw a mask, there are several options. You can always view the mask, never view it, or view it only while drawing it. You can select those by clicking and holding down the brush icon in the layers panel. If you have already drawn a mask, then pressing M on the keyboard will make it visible.

When I first started using local adjustments as they were called then I always used the option to view while drawing but now I prefer to just use M to toggle the mask visibility on and off.

@Ian3 I think he's talking about the focus mask, not the layer mask....

Maybe the image is too much out of focus?

Check your "Focus" settings in the Preferences, it could be that the Threshold is too high or the Opacity it set to 0.

I thought he was talking about both, but I said nothing about the focus mask, partly because I can never get it to work satisfactorily!

    Than you Ian and C-M-B

Yes I did mean both the draw mask and focus mask. I will give your draw mask suggestions a try and revert.

With regard to focus mask, I can confirm that I have already tried changing the Threshold settings and Opacity but without any success. May I also add that whilst it was reasonable to suggest that the image may be "too out of focus", in this case those images that I refer to are tack sharp.

I am a professional photographer and mainly shoot tethered on a sturdy tripod in studio and view the captured images on a 4K monitor to check exposure, lighting and most importantly, to check focus (usually at 400% zoom).
I only use Canon L series prime lenses and macro in the studio and shoot at around f-8 (plus/minus 1 stop) to avoid CA and diffraction on a Canon 5D IV and aways remotely trigger the shutter to avoid any possibility of camera shake so I can assure you that the images are sharp.

The focus highlight feature in Capture One would be a really nice tool to use during the shoot as a quick reference guide to confirm that focus is still intact or to simply be used at a glance from a distance to speed up the workflow. More importantly, it would be ideal for focus stacking on product shoots to ensure that I get my +-20% focus overlap target for each sequential image in the stack. (I do also have Helicon Focus software but would rather stick to my newly acquired Capture One Pro version 11.1 software.)

Thanks again for your help thus far and I certainly look forward to being able to find a solution to my problem.

    Regards

    OK, good news.

Just after I replied to your post this morning (see above), I finally discovered the problem with the Focus Mask not showing

The Focus Mask function ONLY works with camera RAW files and NOT with TIFF files or any other format including DNG.

I was also able to get the Draw mask to show up by following your advice.

Once again, thank you both very much for your help and quick response. Much appreciated and I certainly hope that this can help others struggling with the same problem.

    Regards

    Peter
