Smart albums - AND and OR
One of the advantages of Capture One over Aperture is the ability to create boolean searches like:
Rating >= ***
AND
keyword includes "clouds" OR keyword includes "sky"
at least in principle! I can see where I want to get to in terms of an ALL select and then two indented ANY groups.
I've been half-heartedly messing around trying to do this in practice since v8 and still haven't got a reliable way of pressing the various plusses and minusses to create these searches. The Help is not helpful. Could anybody chip in with an idiot's guide please?

The plus on the left hand side will create a new grouping.
So in your example create the rating criteria.
Click the + on the left hand side note until you add another search option it will not group (since it doesn't make sense logically).
For the line that was just created click the plus on the right hand side - this will get your grouping.
Change the match directly above these two to Any
Adjust the individual lines to be as required.
I agree it could be clearer when creating a new grouping. Until you add an extra line the grouping doesn't show. The way to tell if it is the head of a group is that it will have both the + and - on the right hand side. A line that is just part of the grouping will only have the -0 -

That is a good way to work out what it is doing. I fear that my expectations of what it should do were based on doing Boolean logic at school half a century ago, the software industry has not caught up with George Boole yet.
What I hadn't cottoned on to is that groups can't be nested so in practice the most sophisticated queries you can create are an OR of AND groups or an AND of nested OR Groups. So it's pencil and paper time to reformulate the query into one of those forms and then apply your insight on what the screen is trying to tell me!

If you let me know what you are trying I’ll see if I can work it out. I know Aperture was really good for this and I think probably repeatable in C1. I haven’t had cause to play that much yet but my logic skills are OK. By the time you start nesting it tends to be reducible to something simpler like when solving quadratic equations.
Remember the individual comparison operators in each expression since they are much better than simple equals or does not equals.0 -
A suggestion that may assist with appreciating what is going on in the search and the various places that one can apply filters - especially preset filters.
If one uses the Library Tab and then the Filters tool (or just open the Filters tool as a floating tool) you can select multiple filter values at the same time. In Windows just hold down the Ctrl key and click all of the values you want to select in all of the sections exposed to view.
The 2 dots at the top right corner of the tool provide a tool sub menu and one option there allows you to control which fields you display for use as potential filters.
So if you make sure the fields of interest are visible, Ctrl-Click the radio buttons for the values you want and then display the resulting search using the search tool it is easy to see how things have been structured. Bear in mind there may be more sophisticated ways to get what you want to achieve by direct use of the Search tool but this "keep it simple" approach should help one to feel comfortable when progressing towards the "clever stuff". Or maybe more simply being confident to use the Search tool directly and perhaps save a little time if you have a lot of keywords to list and scroll through (in this example - other fields could also have a lot of entries and it may well be quicker to use direct entry in the search once comfortable with the way it works.)

Tim: I'm not sure Aperture was that good. If Mr Smith married Mrs Brown who had a daughter from a previous marriage called Miss Jones, Aperture could not do the equivalent of (Name like *Smith* OR Name like *Brown* OR Name like *Jones*) AND Rating >= 4* to get my best shots of the family. I know because that one because it even had Joseph Linaschke stumped. Capture One can do it with:
(Name like *Smith* AND Rating >=4*)
OR
(Name like *Brown* AND Rating >=4*)
OR
(Name like *Jones* AND AND Rating >=4*)
which is inelegant but works.

Aperture is good compared to On1Photo in terms of smart albums, that is my most recent reference excepting C1! 0 -
David, I think a guide is a great idea. There is quite a lot to remember for a tool that many may not use regularly.
Maybe it could be a sort of User open Document to build the reference?
But three things are especially noteworthy initially for the irregular user.
Firstly remember that the search data comparisons are case sensitive. It's easy to miss this and wonder why things are not being found.
Secondly you see the interactive results as you create or add to the search criteria. The browser updates and the count of selected items compared to the current collection is displayed.
Thirdly the concept of a trailing asterisk (*) is applied so the search (for text) when using the "contains" comparison. That's very powerful and very useful but, in some circumstance, may create confusion (especially for keywords used in name situations) unless one has a good feel for the names that might be found.

Is there a way of getting a guide into the Phase One help system?
I'll need to do some real work before I do much - Capture One has been unavailabe due to faults and rebuilds for nearly all of the last two weeks. and it would be nice to do some photography.
