Do you mean it won’t open your catalog? (Not sure what you mean by your master file.)

Do you use a catalogue or sessions?

Either way, where are they located. Somewhere in the Pictures folder or is that reserved only for image files?

Regarding multiple install limits, there really aren't any if you deactivate the licenses for previous installs.

Yes, I do mean my Catalog. Under Folders the path shown in C1 20 is HD>Users>...myname...>Pictures>MyC1Photos but nothing more.If I then load files from MyC1Photos catalogue into C1 20 manually, I have to Synchronise these files before they show any images. At no point am I asked to update my images to V20.

    I use Catalogues almost exclusively.

I didn't realise that uninstalling allowed me to carry on with more installs. Thank you for that.

I have solved the problem. My main Capture One catalog was not being recognised by V20. I hunted for it using the two obvious Library options offered by my Mac and neither offered a Capture One folder after Application Support. I then tried the same search by using the Finder and opening its Library option. That did lead to the relevant catalog which I then told it to Open in C1 20 and...Hey Presto! it worked, even offering me an opportunity to upgrade it to V20!

Still not sure why it failed in the first place but now a very happy bunny!

Thanks everybody but I am signing out of this one now.
