Session folder question
Hi all,
Sorry, this is a real beginner’s question. I’m new to CO and to DAM in general. and wanted to start out simple - so I created a session (not a catalog) and imported about 100 existing raw files into it from an external drive. I’ve been editing those images in CO (love the results), but just realized that my Capture folder is empty. All the other session folders, e.g., Output, Selects, and Trash have the appropriate images in them, but the Capture folder is empty. Is that an issue? Should I move the images into the Capture folder, and if so how? And.. what did I do wrong, if anything, on import?
Thanks for your help,
gareth

Hi Gareth,
No it's not an issue.
The capture folder is created to be the default location for images to make life easier when shooting tethered. apIn that use case the images are stored directly in the computer and it's good to have a default location to put them in (though one can change that).
The same for Importing. You can import to the Capture folder or somewhere else.
Or indeed not import at all and simply reference the files where they are. Make the folder a "favourite" if you want the session to retain a permanent link to that folder. However in my opinion there are benefits to making use of the import function especially for new files. (Renaming on import being one of them.)
In all cases the folders are a convenience and you can choose other folders in other locations to perfom the role if you prefer.
So for example I tend to use the Capture folder with subfolders for my sessions.
I rarely use the Selects option. I do use Delete though I tend not to bother deleting much normally. I certainly use the Output folder, usually with a selection of subfolders created automatically as part of the "Process" functionality.
There is a lot you can do but when starting out I recommend keeping things simple and discover the options step by step by being inquisitive when you are ready to find out more.

Thanks for the quick reply, Grant - appreciate it.
When you say "not import at all and simply reference the files where they are," does that have downstream ramifications - for example if you want to later import the images processed during a "session," into a catalog? Or is the fact that CO references the files all that's necessary for it to keep track of them?
BTW - Is using CO in this fashion (session without importing) similar to using Adobe Bridge (which is what I've used in the past along w/ PS).
Thanks again,

Hi Gareth,
I have never used Bridge so I can't answer that question.
C1 in sessions mode will add a folder to each image storing folder you access (it doesn't matter where that folder is) and in the Capture One folder can be found sub-folders for the files that are used to store the edit activities and a cache for both thumbnails (used by the Browser) and Preview files (Used in the viewer).
If you have "imported" the images to the session (no matter where you have actually located them) they will be know to thee session database file. Likewise if you don't import but navigate to an existing file folder and make that folder a "Favourite" the cosession database file will know about them.
If you open a non-"imported" folder of images and do not make the folder a "favourite" then the edit info and cache will exist waiting discovery by another session or a catalogue import activity at some future time.
This is actually quite a simple and effective concept but it is very easy to overthink it. Be warned!
The main benefit of holding the session images WITHIN the session folder structure (typically achieved by importing but there are other ways to get them in there.everything for the top folder ) is that if you wish to archive or move the session it is very easy to copy the session in its entirety - to another disk or another machine for example - and retain its operational state.0 -
Thanks again - great info. I played around last night and discovered the folder structure you mention, but did not try making any of the image folders I accessed a favorite. Will try that today.
C1 seems like a very flexible platform, and the raw conversion is beautiful.

I am probably overthinking as well, but the answers in this post have clarified some of my understanding of how sessions work so I thought that I would ask about a couple more.
In my import dialogue I specify Capture Folder as the destination.
After importing, I find all my images in the system folder in subfolders of Capture exactly as expected.
So far so good. However I imagined that the (session created) Capture Folder in Session Folders would be an alias to the one in the Systems folder. It isn't because when I click on it I see a "no images in collection" message.
This is not a problem but it means that I don't understand what is going on and I would like to.
My second puzzlement is that at every import, C1 generates an untitled album in Session Albums containing the last imported images. I have created an album called Imports hoping that I could highlight this before importing and that all imported images would end up there but it remains empty.
As a work around I simply move the contents of the untitled album into Imports after each import and then delete the untitled album, so again this is not really a problem but I am bothered by my lack of understanding.
I have already learned huge amounts from this forum so thank you to all the contributors for the help.

Hi Dave -
Good questions. Have you seen this recent webinar (Exploring Session Workflows)?

I finished watching the suggested webinar today and there is lot of useful information in it as you would expect.
But there's more ....
I'll see if I can answer Dave's questions.
Dave, your first question.
Do I read it correctly that you have imported to the default Capture folder in sub-folders?
C1 is looking for images in a collection not folders. So your import (as with most of mine) likely has no images in the default Capture folder, just folders. Select a folder and you will see images. (If, for example, you were shooting tethered and using the Captures folder without subfolders all of the images shot would be in the Capture folder and visible from there as a collection.
By default the "import all" also creates an "All images" session album and a "Five Stars" album.
The All Images album, after an import, should show you all the imported images.
For the second question, the Album is an album not a folder - rather like the All Images album BUT specifically referencing the images just imported no matter where the import has placed them.
C1 assumes that you will want to do as you have done and have some sort of sub-folder from an import rather than just dump everything into the Capture folder in this instance. So the Capture folder is simply the Master location for sets of imported files in their own folders by default. (You can also specify locations outside the session folder structure in various ways should you wish to but for most purposes that negates the power of the session in terms of portability. See the explanation of portability at the end of the webinar.)
Because C1 epects you to want to use some form of named subfolder it creates one even if you don't attempt to name it in import (Default is "Empty Name").
The best I can suggest is that you play with the "Import To" section of the Import dialogue and especially take a look at the Sample Path which will show you where C1 intended to send the files based on your current settings. For long paths hover the cursor over the path and the full path will be shown shortly.
If you specify the default "Capture" folder as the sub folder you will get subfolders in the Capture folder.
If you specify the Session Folder you will get new folders one level up from the above alongside the Capture folder.
If you specify the Session Folder with Capture as the subfolder you should see the images in the capture folder - but check the Sample Path to be sure!
It's all very powerful especially when you bear in mind that the structure you establish here can also carry through to be used to influence the output folder structure as well if that is helpful to your needs.

Thanks Gareth.
I have looked at previous C1 videos which did not help with my issues but I did not find the one you recommended which did.
In case anyone else is interested, the answer to my first problem is that when clicking on Capture Folder in System Folders, all the subfolders and images are revealed whereas clicking on Capture Folder in Session Folders only images not in subfolders are revealed. In my example therefore the result is a blank, because all the images are in subfolders.
David Grover demonstrated this in his webinar
I can’t think of any benefit in this behaviour but I can stop being irritated by it now.
Similarly I will just have to live with the auto generation of untitled albums on import.
That is just the way Sessions work.
At least I can now enjoy using all the image adjustments capabilities without worrying that I was misusing the program in some way.
Thanks also to Grant whose message popped up as I was writing this.
I think that I have got my head around how Sessions work now.
I do like this forum

Dave,
You can name (or set a convention for the naming of) the subfolders on import.
Tokens are available. Or just enter a name. You can save settings as presets and there are 3 of the more common choices available as presets to get things started.
Very much like the the other token based naming options in C1 so the webinar sort of covered that functionality when presenting outputs. Click in the three dots to the right of the "Sub Folder" field to get to the naming options window.
