Do you have a memory card in the camera when trying to connect?

I have seen a number of posts about the 5D4 tethering in recent times but I think most Mac related and as I don't use Mac and don't have a 5D4 I'm not completely informed about the details of the problems reported.

I would suggest running a search at the "community" level in this support system. That should list all potentially related documents and forum posts. Probably best to use things like 5D4 AND 5D MkIV in the search in order to cover all possibilities.

Thanks Grant - for some strange reason having a memory card in the camera seems to be the culprit! Not sure why this started now, I always keep one loaded up, incase I have to shoot something untethered quickly during a shoot. But glad to have solved the mystery, for now....

    Hey Tom,

I was having pretty much an identical problem with my Mark IV after very recently upgrading to C1 20.  Camera not connecting.  Could see it "flash" on for a sec but would then disappear.  I re-activated C1 12 and same thing!  Very frustrating and a bit scary. Some switches were thrown on install of C1 20 I believe.  This was with my 2019 MacBook Pro - still running Mojave for the same reasons you cited.  I also spent an hour on the phone with Apple support to no avail.

I reached out to another photographer friend of mine who suggested a few things.  I ended up doing an SMC reset and a PRAM reset.  I had never even heard of this before but ended up being quite easy to perform and what do you know?  It worked!  Even works with a CF card in the camera.  Here's a link regarding the resets:

C1 - 12 and 20 - still don't like my Tether Tools cable unless I connect with another cable first so maybe still a bit buggy but it works!

Would be nice if C1 gets this all sorted out soon and maybe it would be a good idea to have a warning at point of purchase about this type of thing in the future.  The forums were already full with these issues when I purchased my upgrade - of course I didn't look there until after the fact - so they were aware of this at the time.

    Hope this helps!

I'm not suggesting it is exclusively a C1 issue.  Many moving parts to these things.  In this case Mac, C1, Canon and possibly Tether Tools.  My comment about C1 at the end of my post is just to say that C1 was aware of these issues and I would have liked to have known that.  They do warn about upgrading to Catalina in another area of their website.

Also, the fact that upon installation of C1 20, C1 12 developed the same problem was deeply concerning and kinda pointed a finger as it had been working perfectly the day before.

As professional photographers we realize that different technology providers are just that; different.  So we wait for awhile so the different players can catch up with each other.  Mac and Adobe for instance.  One might want to be on the cutting edge of technology but certainly not on the bleeding edge.  With C1 20 I thought I had waited long enough and this ended up not being the case.

Ultimately, the reason for my post to this forum was to help others having trouble with this same issue.

    What's yours Walter?

    John,

I appreciate hearing about the PRAM reset. I was having this same issue for a few weeks – Canon 5d MkIV, CO 20, 2019 Macbook Pro, Catalina – camera refused to tether, or would connect briefly and then stop. I reset my whole machine, reinstalling OS and all apps from scratch, and at the same time CO 20.0.3 was released. Issue was solved after that.

    Hi Jay,

I guess what you did was essentially a hardcore SMC/PRAM reset!  Sounds like a lot of work and time.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out!
