make copy/apply more efficient
You know what? One of the key things why I love Capture One and why I think it is superiour to other photo development tools is its amazing efficiency. I can very easily and quickly apply just a few edits, each in a very intuitive way, and get gourgeous pictures.
Unfortunately, exception proves the rule.
One of my most used features, the copy&paste of adjustments ("copy/apply"), is the by far least efficient implementation I have ever seen. Really painful to use, at least for myself. Always takes 3-4 steps for getting it done.
- I need to press copy.
- I need to select the adjustments I want to copy&apply.
- with the individual tools copy/apply I even get asked both times for selecting the adjustments I want to copy&paste (it is even hard to understand why CO cannot even remember my choice between both selections)
- I need to press apply.
Really annoying!!! Takes my nerves. So much slowing down my flow.
I also don´t understand what "edit selected" is for? I anyhow have always do the same, independently if I have mutiple images selected or not. Select image(s) ... copy ... select adjustments ...apply.
So, making a long story short, I dare to suggest the following as a future enhancement ...
- reduce steps needed for "copy/apply" to 1(-2) max
- allow me to suggest a simple "harmonize" (or "synchronize", you name it) button, 1-click -> adjustments copied&applied ... yes, I know, seems to be very Lightroomish, but what can I say, it simply works ... you don´t need to reinvent every wheel for being different ... you ARE different and you ARE much better anyhow
- dare to do some real user testing for the "edit selected" function, could be eye opening, I promise
- at least make "edit selected" more intuitive, if I have it activated, I naturally expect that any adjustment applied actually goes for all selected
- keep the brilliant "copy/apply" buttons with each individual tool ... this is great!
- but with this individual tool "copy/apply", in case you might insist keeping both the associated question boxes for the copy and apply steps, at least allow CO to remember the choices with the copy step, please ... pleeeaaase!
In summary, I am deeply convinced that making "copy/apply" from a 3-4-steps thing to an (ideally) 1-click thing would be a huge improvement to Capture One.

Happy to hear that it works better for you than for me, Walter. But this still doesn't explain why a single action needs 2 or more steps. And it doesn´t explain why - with single tool settings - I have to 2x confirm the adjustments I want to copy&apply when doing this with an individual tool ... making it actually 4 steps in total for a single action.
Thank you for reminding me that (with single tool settings) I can skip the 2 confirmation dialoges by pressing the Alt or simply make it a single action by pressing the Shift(Opt) key. I have to say that I didn't fully appreciate this option so far. But ... why the heck don't I have the Shift(Opt) key feature with the main copy&apply button? Having that might make my day already.
Beyond that, I think you will agree that it is a fair expectation with an "edit selected" labeled function that all selected are edited (= at once, without any additional action needed). Interestingly, for the star labeling it exactly works as I would expect and describe. When having "edit selected" active, and I add a star rating to a series of selected images, all get it applied at the same time (without any additional copy&apply action). This is perfect. This is what I would naturally expect for any adjustment. That would really efficient for working with many similar shots, and actually is what I simply expect an "edit selected" to do.
I think what confuses me most is that I experience CO as a tool with extraordinary usability and efficience, and that just a basic function is an exception and that there are so many inconsistencies in the function's behaviour across touch points.
The only point where I unfortunately really need to disagree with you is that CO would be more efficient with copy&apply adjustments than LR. At least for my personal way of working it is definitely and by far(!) not. But I anyhow don't see this as a CO vs LR race. To make a clear statement, for me personally LR is out of game, and - at the risk repeating myself - I love CO for being in total much more efficient and allowing me to produce much better images. I simply hope that speaking up can help getting my editing tool of choice closer to perfection.
